Fervo Energy Secures $421 Million in Debt Financing for Cape Station as IPO Plans Take Shape
Fervo Energy closed a $421 million non-recourse financing package for its flagship Cape Station enhanced geothermal project in Utah, with first power expected in 2026 and an IPO filing reportedly underway.

Fervo Energy announced on 19 March 2026 that it has closed $421 million in non-recourse debt financing for the first phase of its Cape Station enhanced geothermal system (EGS) development in Beaver County, Utah, according to a company press release. The deal marks a turning point for the geothermal sector: it is among the largest project-finance packages ever assembled for an EGS facility and signals that institutional lenders now view the technology as a bankable infrastructure asset.
Cape Station is expected to begin delivering power to the grid later this year, reaching roughly 100 megawatts of operating capacity by early 2027, with plans to scale to 500 MW over the following years.
Financing Structure
The $421 million package comprises a $309 million construction-to-term loan, a $61 million tax credit bridge loan, and a $51 million letter of credit facility, according to a BusinessWire filing. The syndicate was coordinated by RBC Capital Markets, Barclays, BBVA, HSBC, MUFG, and Societe Generale, with additional participation from J.P. Morgan, Bank of America, and Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank. The financing was oversubscribed, the company said.
The non-recourse structure means lenders rely on Cape Station’s projected revenue rather than Fervo’s corporate balance sheet, a model standard for mature energy infrastructure but rare for next-generation geothermal, as Utility Dive reported.
Commercial Offtakers and AI-Driven Demand
Cape Station’s output is fully contracted through power purchase agreements with Southern California Edison, Shell Energy, and several community choice aggregators, according to Fervo. The company is also working with NV Energy and Google to develop 115 MW of geothermal capacity to supply the technology company’s data centers in Nevada.
Data center operators have increasingly sought firm, round-the-clock clean power to meet the electricity demands of large-scale AI training and inference workloads. Unlike solar and wind, geothermal provides baseload generation with capacity factors above 90 percent, making it a natural fit for facilities that cannot tolerate intermittent supply, TechCrunch noted.
IPO Trajectory
Fervo has raised more than $1.5 billion to date, including a $462 million Series E round closed in December 2025 with backing from Google, Mitsui, and Tesla co-founder JB Straubel. The company submitted a confidential S-1 filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and has held meetings with major investment banks including Goldman Sachs and Bank of America, according to TechCrunch. Analysts have projected a valuation in the range of $2 billion to $4 billion.
Broader Policy Tailwinds
The financing arrives alongside growing federal support for geothermal development. The U.S. Department of Energy opened a $171.5 million funding opportunity for next-generation geothermal field-scale tests, with letters of intent due 27 March 2026. On Capitol Hill, the House Committee on Natural Resources favorably reported eight geothermal-related bills on 5 March, six with unanimous bipartisan support, while Senators John Hickenlooper and Steve Daines introduced the Geo POWER Act on 17 March to provide milestone-based investment mechanisms for advanced geothermal technologies.
What Comes Next
Fervo’s immediate priority is completing construction at Cape Station and delivering first power on schedule. The company drilled its hottest well to date at a new greenfield site, Project Blanford, reaching temperatures above 555 degrees Fahrenheit at roughly 11,200 feet, according to the company. If Cape Station performs as projected and the IPO proceeds, Fervo would become the first pure-play EGS company on public markets, giving the sector a benchmark stock and a new source of growth capital.
