Postman Rebuilds Its API Platform Around AI-Native Workflows and a Centralized API Catalog
Postman has re-architected its platform with embedded AI, Git-connected workspaces, and a new API Catalog, while restructuring pricing to restrict free-tier collaboration to solo developers.
What Happened
Postman, the API development platform used by more than 40 million developers across 500,000 organizations, announced on March 2 a significant overhaul of its platform centered on embedding artificial intelligence directly into API development workflows. The update introduces an AI-powered Agent Mode, native Git integration, and a new API Catalog designed to serve as a centralized system of record for enterprise API portfolios.
The company describes the changes as a shift from treating AI as a bolt-on assistant to making it a foundational layer of the platform. “The world’s APIs are built and shipped on Postman, and we believe AI should live inside the platform — not alongside it,” said co-founder and CEO Abhinav Asthana in the announcement. “We’ve re-architected our foundation around that principle, delivering intelligence that operates with deep context across the full spectrum of API workflows.”
What Changed
The platform update introduces three major components.
Agent Mode embeds AI capabilities with visibility into specifications, tests, environments, and production behavior. According to the press release, the feature allows developers to understand APIs, execute changes, diagnose issues, and apply updates while operating within existing governance controls. Agent Mode also works with Git repositories to analyze API collections, definitions, and underlying code, reducing manual steps in debugging, test writing, and collection synchronization.
Git-connected Workspaces allow teams to manage API specifications, collections, tests, mocks, and environments directly within their existing Git repositories and local file systems. This marks a departure from Postman’s historically cloud-centric workspace model, bringing API artifacts under the same version control systems developers already use for source code.
API Catalog provides a centralized management plane for APIs and services across an organization. The feature delivers real-time visibility into which APIs exist, their performance metrics, and ownership details. Postman positions it as the enterprise governance layer that was previously absent from the platform — a single pane of glass for API portfolio management that brings together specs, collections, test execution, CI/CD activity, and production observability.
The platform also expanded its protocol support. In addition to its traditional REST and SOAP capabilities, Postman now supports GraphQL, gRPC, WebSocket, Socket.IO, MQTT, the Model Context Protocol, and dedicated AI request types. MCP server integrations are available from Atlassian, Amazon CloudWatch, GitHub, Linear, Sentry, and Webflow, enabling agent-to-agent connectivity through the platform.
Pricing Restructure
Alongside the feature release, Postman restructured its pricing model. The free plan now targets solo developers exclusively, with 50 AI credits and no team collaboration features. Previously, small teams of up to five members could collaborate at no cost.
Paid plans start at $9 per user per month for a Solo tier with 400 AI credits, $19 per user per month for Teams with collaboration features and SDK generation, and $49 per user per month for Enterprise with access to the API Catalog, Private API Network, advanced role-based access control, and audit logging. All paid tiers require annual billing commitments.
The pricing shift effectively introduces a $19-per-user monthly floor for any team collaboration, a notable change for the platform’s large base of small teams and open-source projects that previously relied on the free tier for shared workspaces.
Industry Context
The announcement arrives at a moment when API infrastructure is undergoing broader shifts. GitHub released REST API version 2026-03-10 on March 12, its first calendar version to include breaking changes, signaling an acceleration in API evolution across the developer toolchain. According to Postman’s own State of the API Report, 89 percent of developers now use AI in their workflows, but most organizations still rely on external AI tools rather than platform-embedded capabilities.
Postman’s bet is that as AI agents increasingly interact with services through APIs, the platform that manages those APIs should also manage the intelligence layer. The MCP integration and expanded protocol support position the company to serve not just human developers, but the growing population of autonomous software agents that depend on well-documented, well-governed API surfaces.
Whether that positioning holds will depend on execution. The pricing changes introduce friction for smaller teams at the same moment the platform is asking them to adopt new workflows, and competitors — from open-source alternatives to cloud-native API management tools — are moving toward the same agentic AI narrative.
