Dell Shrinks Workforce by 27 Percent in Three Years as AI Server Revenue Surges 342 Percent

Severance charges have followed, totaling $648 million in fiscal 2024, $693 million in fiscal 2025, and $569 million in fiscal 2026. The payments primarily affected selling, general, and administrative departments, followed by cost of net revenue and research and development.
AI Business Booms as Headcount Falls
The workforce contraction stands in sharp contrast to Dell’s surging AI infrastructure business. Fourth-quarter revenue from AI-optimized servers reached $9 billion, a 342 percent increase year over year. For the full fiscal year, Dell booked $64 billion in AI server orders and exited with a $43 billion backlog, as Fortune reported. The company has guided for $50 billion in AI-optimized server revenue in fiscal 2027, representing 103 percent growth.
CFO David Kennedy, a 27-year Dell veteran who was confirmed in the role in November 2025, told Fortune that the company has deployed agentic AI within its own finance function for reconciliations, accounting journal entries, supply chain digital twins, and sales CRM optimization. He described the approach as delivering “faster decisions, quicker” while maintaining accountability standards for auditors and regulators.
Part of a Broader Industry Pattern
Dell’s sustained workforce reduction is one element of a broader restructuring wave across the technology industry. In the first quarter of 2026 alone, tech companies announced more than 52,000 job cuts in the United States. Oracle began what it described as its largest layoff in company history on March 31, cutting an estimated 20,000 to 30,000 roles to fund a $156 billion AI infrastructure buildout. Block eliminated roughly 40 percent of its workforce in February, with CEO Jack Dorsey explicitly attributing the cuts to AI productivity gains.
What distinguishes Dell’s approach is its methodical pace. Rather than a single large-scale reduction, the company has executed a steady annual contraction, trimming roughly the same proportion of its workforce each year while simultaneously investing in AI-driven automation of internal operations. Dell’s stock has risen approximately 20 percent year-to-date in 2026, suggesting investors have rewarded the strategy.

Dell’s 10-K filing offers no indication that the three-year trend of annual 10 percent reductions will reverse in fiscal 2027. The company continues to describe its cost management as “ongoing” and its business modernization initiatives as a work in progress. With AI server demand showing no signs of slowing and the company projecting more than $50 billion in AI-optimized server revenue next fiscal year, the strategic calculus remains clear: fewer employees, more infrastructure, and deeper integration of AI tools across both products and internal operations.
