How Rolldown Changes Vite’s Architecture

Since Vite 2, the tool relied on two separate engines: esbuild handled dependency pre-bundling and TypeScript/JSX transformation during development, while Rollup produced optimized, tree-shaken production bundles. This split occasionally caused subtle behavioral differences between development and production builds, a longstanding pain point for teams maintaining large applications.

Rolldown unifies both roles into a single bundler written in Rust. Because it is built on Oxc, a Rust-based compiler toolchain that handles parsing, module resolution, TypeScript/JSX transpilation, and minification, Rolldown can leverage native multithreaded execution with lower overhead than JavaScript-based tooling. Critically, Rolldown maintains full compatibility with the Rollup plugin API, meaning most existing Vite plugins work without modification.

Both Rolldown and Oxc are open-source projects maintained by VoidZero, a company founded in 2024 by Evan You, the creator of both Vite and Vue.js. The vertical integration of bundler, compiler, and build tool under a single team is a deliberate strategy to ensure consistency across the toolchain.

Performance in Practice

The headline performance figures come from real-world adoption during Vite 8’s extended beta period. Linear reported that its production build times dropped from 46 seconds to 6 seconds after migrating. Other early adopters saw similarly substantial improvements: Ramp recorded a 57 percent reduction in build times, Mercedes-Benz.io measured a 38 percent decrease, and Beehiiv achieved a 64 percent reduction.

The Vite team has also published preliminary results for a forthcoming Full Bundle Mode, still in development, which shows 3x faster dev server startup, 40 percent faster full page reloads, and 10x fewer network requests during development. These numbers suggest that the performance gains from the Rolldown migration are only the beginning of what the new architecture enables.

Additional Features

Beyond the bundler swap, Vite 8 introduces several other changes. A new integrated DevTools option provides built-in debugging and build analysis capabilities. Vite 8 enters a build tool market that has grown increasingly competitive. Turbopack, backed by Vercel and tightly integrated with Next.js, is written in Rust and focuses on incremental compilation for development speed. Rspack, developed by ByteDance, offers Webpack compatibility with Rust performance. Bun’s built-in bundler, written in Zig, has shown strong benchmark results in certain workloads.
