Four Private Spacecraft Line Up for Lunar Landings in 2026 as NASA's Commercial Moon Program Expands
Astrobotic, Intuitive Machines, Firefly Aerospace, and Blue Origin are each preparing lunar lander missions for 2026 under NASA's CLPS program, marking an unprecedented year for commercial deep-space exploration.
Overview
At least four commercially built lunar landers are targeting Moon missions in 2026, making it the busiest year yet for NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative. Astrobotic’s Griffin-1, Intuitive Machines’ IM-3, Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost Mission 2, and Blue Origin’s Blue Moon Mark 1 are all in various stages of preparation, collectively carrying rovers, scientific instruments, and technology demonstrations to the lunar surface. If even half of the missions succeed, 2026 will deliver more commercial lunar landings in a single year than the program has achieved to date.
The surge follows a string of hard-won lessons. Of the four CLPS missions that have attempted landings so far, only Firefly’s Blue Ghost achieved a fully upright touchdown in March 2025. Astrobotic’s Peregrine suffered a propellant leak in January 2024 and never reached the surface, while both of Intuitive Machines’ Nova-C landers — Odysseus in February 2024 and Athena in March 2025 — tipped onto their sides shortly after landing. Each failure has fed engineering improvements into the next attempt.
Griffin-1: A New Primary Payload
Astrobotic’s Griffin-1 is scheduled to launch no earlier than July 2026 on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy from Kennedy Space Center’s Launch Complex 39A. The lander will target the Nobile Crater region near the lunar south pole, an area of intense scientific interest because of suspected water-ice deposits in permanently shadowed craters.
The mission was originally designed to carry NASA’s Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover (VIPER), but the agency cancelled the rover in July 2024 due to cost overruns affecting other CLPS missions. In its place, Venturi Astrolab’s FLEX Lunar Innovation Platform (FLIP) rover became the primary payload in February 2025. The roughly 1,000-pound FLIP rover is undergoing thermal vacuum testing with core systems integrated, while Griffin’s own structural build is nearing full integration with pressure tanks, attitude-control thrusters, and solar arrays completing fit checks. Astrobotic’s smaller CubeRover and BEACON autonomous navigation demonstrator round out the payload manifest.
IM-3: Third Time at Reiner Gamma
Intuitive Machines is preparing its third lunar landing attempt with the IM-3 mission, targeting the second half of 2026. A Nova-C lander named Trinity will launch on a SpaceX Falcon 9 and attempt to touch down at the Reiner Gamma swirl, a magnetic anomaly on the Moon’s near side at 7.5 degrees north latitude. The site’s unexplained magnetic field makes it a high-priority target for planetary scientists.
The mission carries four NASA science payloads, including the Lunar Vertex (LVx) rover to study the swirl’s magnetic properties and a pair of suitcase-sized Cooperative Autonomous Distributed Robotic Explorers (CADRE) rovers designed to capture three-dimensional surface imagery. An Australian payload, ALEPH-1, will test plant growth in the lunar environment.
After two landings that ended with the spacecraft on its side, Intuitive Machines has implemented significant engineering changes. The IM-3 lander will carry an extensive crater-map library for its landing software to reference and will perform 12 lunar orbits before descent — four times as many as its predecessors. Redundant laser rangefinders have also been added to improve altitude measurements during the final approach.
Blue Ghost 2 and Blue Moon Mark 1
Firefly Aerospace is planning its second lunar mission, Blue Ghost Mission 2, for late 2026. The mission employs a two-spacecraft stack: the Blue Ghost lander paired with an Elytra Dark orbital relay satellite. The target is the lunar far side, where direct communication with Earth is impossible without a relay. If successful, it would make Firefly the first American company to land on the Moon’s far side, a feat previously accomplished only by China’s Chang’e program. The mission will also deliver the European Space Agency’s Lunar Pathfinder communications satellite.
Blue Origin rounds out the lineup with its Blue Moon Mark 1 cargo lander, designed to deliver up to three metric tons near Shackleton Crater at the lunar south pole. The lander serves as a pathfinder for the company’s Human Landing System, which NASA selected for a future Artemis mission. Its payload includes NASA’s Stereo Cameras for Lunar Plume Surface Studies, intended to characterize how engine exhaust interacts with lunar regolith during landing.
Program Context
NASA’s CLPS program is structured for multiple task orders with a cumulative ceiling of $2.6 billion through 2028. The model treats commercial providers as delivery services, paying for transport to the lunar surface rather than building government-owned hardware. The approach accepts higher individual mission risk in exchange for more frequent, lower-cost access to the Moon.
The four missions scheduled for 2026 collectively span the near side, far side, and both south-pole regions — a geographic breadth that would have required multiple Apollo-scale programs under the old paradigm. Whether the hardware performs as intended remains an open question, but the commercial pipeline is now deep enough that a single failure no longer stalls the broader exploration effort.
