Vertical Aerospace Completes First Piloted Thrustborne Transition, Becoming Third Western eVTOL Developer to Demonstrate the Maneuver
Bristol-based Vertical Aerospace flew its VX4 prototype from vertical takeoff into wingborne cruise on April 2, marking the third such piloted demonstration in the West and clearing the way for two-way transition trials later this year.

Vertical Aerospace completed the first piloted one-way thrustborne transition of its full-scale VX4 electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) prototype on April 2, lifting off vertically at Cotswold Airport in England before accelerating into wingborne cruise flight. According to Vertical Aerospace, the milestone makes the Bristol-based company the latest Western developer to demonstrate the maneuver that is central to the air taxi concept: transferring lift from propellers to wings in real-world, piloted conditions.
The achievement lands as the broader advanced air mobility sector enters a critical year. The FAA’s eVTOL Integration Pilot Program, which selected eight state-led projects covering 26 states in March, is expected to enable early commercial operations in the United States by summer, while European regulators are tracking a parallel certification timeline.
The Flight
Test pilot Paul Stone flew the transition sequence under the UK Civil Aviation Authority’s Permit to Fly regime. The VX4 lifted off vertically, then its front propellers tilted forward to generate horizontal thrust while the rear propellers stowed. The aircraft accelerated to approximately 65 knots — roughly half of its 120-knot top speed — before completing a conventional runway landing, according to Aviation Week.
Stone described the flight as closely matching predictions from simulation work. “The response was exactly as the simulation predicted — smooth, stable and fully under control throughout,” he said, as reported by Aviation Week.
CEO Stuart Simpson called the flight “a turning point not just for Vertical Aerospace, but for the entire advanced air mobility industry,” according to the company’s press release.
What Comes Next
The April 2 flight represents the first half of a two-way transition sequence. In a full two-way transition, the aircraft takes off vertically, cruises on its wings, and then decelerates back into hover for a vertical landing — eliminating the need for a runway entirely. Vertical Aerospace has indicated that completing the full sequence is the next major milestone in its flight test program.
According to Aviation Week, testing began in December following months of incremental envelope expansion, with progress deliberately paced under the CAA’s Permit to Fly regime, which mandates data review between flights. A second VX4 prototype has already been rolled out, and the company plans to begin assembling the first conforming production aircraft — called Valo — later in 2026. Hybrid-electric powertrain modifications are planned for summer flight trials, offering increased range beyond the all-electric Valo’s designed 100-mile range at speeds up to 150 mph.
Vertical is targeting 2028 for type certification of the Valo from the UK CAA, working in collaboration with the European Union Aviation Safety Agency. The certification test fleet is expected to include up to seven aircraft, according to Aviation Week.
Competitive Context
Vertical Aerospace is the third Western eVTOL developer to demonstrate a piloted transition flight, following Joby Aviation and BETA Technologies, both of which have completed full two-way transitions. Archer Aviation is advancing its own VTOL testing, Eve Air Mobility completed its first remotely piloted hover in December, and Boeing-owned Wisk flew its autonomous Gen 6 aircraft in late 2025, as reported by Aviation Week.
The company holds approximately 1,500 pre-orders from customers spanning four continents, including American Airlines, Japan Airlines, GOL, Avolon, and Bristow, according to the press release.
What We Don’t Know
Several questions remain about Vertical’s path to market. The company secured a conditional $850 million financing package on March 30, but according to Aviation Week, significant capital beyond the $80 million in near-term equity funding remains contingent on market conditions. Vertical’s stock has declined approximately 60 percent since the start of the year, trading around $2.30 following the announcement.
The timeline from one-way transition to full two-way transition — and from there to a production-conforming aircraft that can satisfy regulators — remains uncertain. Joby Aviation, which is further along in the FAA’s five-stage certification process, has itself cautioned that schedules depend on resolving open compliance findings. Whether Vertical can maintain its 2028 certification target while navigating the technical complexity of full transition flight and the financial pressures of a declining share price will be a defining question for the company over the next two years.
