IBM on April 28 made generally available Bob, an AI development partner that the company is pitching as a way to take enterprises from AI-assisted coding to production-ready software, according to its press release. The product, which had been in internal use at IBM since June 2025, dynamically routes coding tasks across multiple AI models, exposes its actions through a command-line audit tool called BobShell, and is sold on a consumption-based scheme priced in units the company calls Bobcoins.

Multi-Model Routing

The centerpiece of Bob’s design is dynamic task-by-task model selection. IBM said Bob “dynamically routes tasks to a suitable model based on accuracy, performance, and cost, drawing on a mix of frontier models including Anthropic Claude, Mistral open source models, and IBM Granite,” per its press release. VentureBeat reports that the routing layer also dispatches work to specialized fine-tuned models for code reasoning, security, and next-edit prediction.

The Register notes that the architecture combines “frontier LLMs, open-source models, small language models (SLMs) and IBM’s Granite SLM family” — a stack designed to let cheaper, smaller models handle routine work while reserving frontier models for the harder calls.

IBM said “Bob launched inside IBM in June 2025 with 100 developers,” and that more than 80,000 of its employees are currently using the tool, with surveyed users self-reporting an average 45 percent productivity gain, per the company’s press release.

Two IBM business units provided more granular figures, also via the announcement: developers surveyed from the IBM Instana team “reported an average 70% reduction in time spent on selected tasks,” equivalent to roughly 10 hours per week, while the IBM Maximo team “completed the tasks in hours, resulting in an estimated 69% time savings.” The 45 percent average headline figure was repeated independently by The Register, which characterized the IBM workforce as “the 80,000 big bluers pressed into guinea pig status last year.”

Pricing: A Coin-Denominated SaaS

Unlike fixed-seat coding subscriptions, Bob’s commercial model is consumption-based and uses an internal currency. The Register reports that “current prices range from a $20 per month for the Pro tier with 40 Bobcoins, to Ultra at $200, with 500 Bobcoins.” The same outlet quantified the unit: “What’s a Bobcoin?
