Unknown Worlds Entertainment will launch Subnautica 2 into Early Access on May 14, 2026 at 08:00 PDT / 15:00 UTC, the studio announced on its official site. The release brings the underwater survival series to multiplayer for the first time, with up to four players able to explore the new alien ocean together. The standard Early Access edition is priced at $29.99 USD, according to Unknown Worlds, with regional pricing handled by individual storefronts.

The launch lands roughly two months after a Delaware court reinstated Ted Gill as CEO of Unknown Worlds, as reported by Game Developer, capping a dispute between Unknown Worlds executives and parent company Krafton over a $250 million earnout tied to the sequel’s launch timing.

Release details

Subnautica 2 will be available on Steam, the Epic Games Store, the Windows Store and Xbox Series X|S at launch, per Xbox Wire. Microsoft also lists Xbox on PC and ROG Xbox Ally among supported Xbox platforms, and the game is included day one with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, Xbox Wire reports.

Unknown Worlds enabled pre-purchasing and pre-loading 72 hours before launch, the studio said. Players who buy Subnautica 2 before May 25 will receive a Reaper Leviathan in-game base decoration, according to the official announcement. Only one Early Access edition is available — a standard version with no founder’s bundles or premium tiers, Insider Gaming notes.

Multiplayer and cross-platform play

This is the first Subnautica title to ship with multiplayer support. The Steam product page lists up to four-player online co-op and cross-platform multiplayer as core features. Xbox Wire describes the option to “traverse this mysterious new world alone or with up to three of your friends in optional co-operative multiplayer,” with the ability to invite friends on other platforms directly from the Xbox menu, per Microsoft. Setting, engine and content

Subnautica 2 is built on Unreal Engine 5, according to Wikipedia, and the studio has confirmed Ben Prunty as the composer. Engadget describes the premise as a sequel set “on a new alien world where players are stranded after their colony ship experiences a malfunction during transit,” in its preview. The sequel adds an ocean-current mechanic that can carry players between zones and a DNA-modification system that lets players acquire new abilities, as documented on Wikipedia.

Early Access roadmap

The studio expects to remain in Early Access “about 2 to 3 years” based on its prior development pattern with the original Subnautica and Below Zero, per its Steam page. Updates during Early Access are planned to add “more biomes, creatures, craftables, features, and narratives,” the studio writes. Players who purchase during Early Access pay once and receive all updates through the eventual 1.0 release, the developer notes, although the studio has also confirmed the price will rise after Early Access concludes, in its Steam FAQ.

The lawsuit overshadowing the launch

The May 14 release follows a Delaware Chancery Court ruling that found Krafton illegally fired Unknown Worlds’ leadership to avoid paying a $250 million earnout tied to Subnautica 2. Vice Chancellor Lori Will issued the March 16, 2026 opinion holding that “Krafton illegally fired Gill to take over the Subnautica 2 studio,” Game Developer reports. The court reinstated Ted Gill as CEO but did not reinstate co-founders Max McGuire and Charlie Cleveland, as covered in a separate Game Developer report.

The executives had argued that “Krafton schemed to sabotage the Subnautica 2 early access timeline to avoid paying $250 million in payouts,” Game Developer notes, referencing a performance bonus attached to Krafton’s 2021 acquisition of Unknown Worlds. The earnout sits on top of a $500 million acquisition price, according to Game Developer.

The initial early access launch date was announced to IGN by Steve Papoutsis, the CEO Krafton installed after Gill’s removal, Game Developer reported. The reinstated executives initially objected that the announcement violated the court’s order, then withdrew the contention in a letter filed in April, stating they “no longer contend that Krafton violated the Court’s March 16, 2026 opinion,” Game Developer reported.

A second phase of the Delaware case is still pending.
