Microsoft has released the TypeScript 7.0 Beta, marking a major architectural shift as the compiler and language service have been ported to a native Go implementation. The new version, often about 10 times faster than TypeScript 6.0 thanks to native code speed and shared memory parallelism, is available today via a preview package and is already enabled by default in recent Visual Studio 2026 Insiders builds.
What We Know
The TypeScript team announced the 7.0 Beta on April 21, 2026, describing it as the result of a methodical port rather than a ground-up rewrite. “The new Go codebase was methodically ported from our existing implementation rather than rewritten from scratch, and its type-checking logic is structurally identical to TypeScript 6.0,” according to Microsoft’s TypeScript Team. This ensures the compiler enforces the exact same semantics developers already rely on.
The beta is distributed as the @typescript/native-preview package on npm. Developers can install it with npm install -D @typescript/native-preview@beta and run the tsgo binary in place of tsc, which reports “Version 7.0.0-beta” and maintains identical behavior on TypeScript code while being much faster, per the official announcement.
A companion TypeScript Native Preview extension for VS Code provides the same performance benefits in editors. For VS Code users, enabling the native experience requires setting "js/ts.experimental.useTsgo": true in settings, according to the typescript-go GitHub repository.
In Visual Studio 2026 18.6 Insiders 3 and later, the built-in TypeScript SDK now defaults to the 7.0 Beta native preview for projects that do not pin a specific version, as reported by Sayed Ibrahim Hashimi on the Visual Studio Blog. The team observed compile time improvements of up to 10x for large codebases along with substantially reduced memory usage and project load times decreased roughly 8x.
TypeScript 7.0 introduces new CLI flags to control parallelism: --checkers (default 4 type-checking workers), --builders for parallel project references, and --singleThreaded for debugging or constrained environments. It adopts the stricter defaults introduced in TypeScript 6.0 (such as strict: true and module: esnext) and turns many previously deprecated behaviors into hard errors.
The typescript-go repository indicates that core features including parsing, type checking, declaration emit, JSX, and build mode / project references are marked “done” with high compatibility. However, watch mode remains a prototype (watches files and rebuilds but lacks optimized incremental rechecking), the language service is “in progress,” and the programmatic API is “not ready.”
Microsoft has collaborated with teams at Bloomberg, Canva, Figma, Google, Lattice, Linear, Miro, Notion, Slack, Vanta, Vercel, VoidZero, and others on pre-release builds, with feedback described as “overwhelmingly positive” and many reporting they are “shaving off a majority of their build times,” according to the TypeScript Team announcement.
What We Don’t Know
While the beta is considered stable enough for daily use by the team, full feature parity is still in progress. Watch mode and the full programmatic API are not yet ready for production. Some editor features in the VS Code native preview and Visual Studio integration, such as certain code actions, navigation groupings, and hover tooltips, have known gaps that the teams are actively addressing.
The stable release of TypeScript 7.0 (under the typescript package name with tsc entrypoint) is planned within the next two months from the April announcement, with a release candidate a few weeks prior. Exact timing for full API support is targeted for 7.1 or later.
JavaScript support has been reworked for greater consistency with TypeScript analysis, which intentionally removes or changes support for some Closure Compiler and legacy JSDoc patterns. Projects relying heavily on these patterns will need updates, as detailed in the repository’s CHANGES.md.
Analysis
The move to a native Go implementation represents one of the most significant engineering efforts in TypeScript’s history. By choosing Go for the port—because the existing codebase’s functional style maps well to idiomatic Go—the team achieved substantial performance wins without sacrificing behavioral compatibility.
