Overview
Figure AI began a public livestream on May 13 in which a small fleet of its Figure 03 humanoids sorted packages on a moving conveyor belt with no teleoperation and no scheduled stop. The original plan, according to CEO Brett Adcock, was an eight-hour autonomous shift. By May 17 the run had passed 81 hours and 101,391 packages, according to the Seoul Economic Daily.
The demonstration is the company’s most aggressive public test to date of Helix-02, the vision-language-action model Figure unveiled on January 27, per Figure’s own technical post. It is also a direct response to the persistent industry doubt that any of the current generation of humanoid robots can yet sustain real shifts on real work — the kind of doubt that has accompanied every glossy stage demo since 2024.
What we know
Adcock announced the start of the run on May 13 with an X post that framed the goal narrowly. “Watch a team of humanoid robots running a full 8-hr shift at human performance levels. This is fully autonomous running Helix-02,” he wrote, as quoted by TechTimes. After the first eight hours passed without a system failure, the company decided to extend it. “Our original goal was an 8-hour run. After zero failures yesterday, we decided to keep going… This is uncharted territory,” Adcock said in coverage by Humanoids Daily.
The robots run on Helix-02 entirely onboard — no cloud calls, no remote operators. Each robot identifies a barcode on an incoming package, picks the parcel up, reorients it so the label faces down, and places it on a moving conveyor, Humanoids Daily reports. The robots cycle off the line to recharge on their own and signal a peer to take over before their batteries run out, according to Bloomberg wire copy republished by The Star.
The milestones have moved up steadily through the week:

- By the 38-hour mark, the robots had sorted nearly 50,000 parcels at roughly three seconds each, BigGo Finance reports.
- At around 50 hours, Adcock told reporters the fleet was approaching 60,000 packages with “absolutely no teleoperation into this,” The Star reports.
- After 72 hours, the count reached 88,000 packages, Crypto Briefing reports.
- At 81 hours, the demonstration crossed 101,391 packages, the Seoul Economic Daily reports.
Human package sorters average about three seconds per parcel, The Star reports; Figure says its robots are now near that mark. Viewers on the livestream gave the robots nicknames — Bob, Frank and Gary in early coverage — and Figure added on-screen name tags after the community adopted them, Interesting Engineering reports. Glitchwire pegs the company at a $39 billion valuation with more than $1 billion raised; Crypto Briefing describes it as “nearly $40 billion.”
The stack behind the demo
Helix-02 is the second-generation version of the vision-language-action model that Figure first showed in 2024. The architecture splits into three layers running at different cadences: System 0 controls balance and joint coordination at 1 kHz and is a 10M-parameter neural network; System 1 translates perception to motor targets at 200 Hz; System 2 reasons about goals, Figure said in its January 27 release post. Figure says the policy was trained on “over 1,000 hours of joint-level retargeted human motion data” and that it replaced “109,504 lines of hand-engineered C++” — the bulk of the legacy locomotion code, per Figure.
The Figure 03 hardware that the livestream is running on has tactile sensors in the fingertips capable of detecting forces as small as three grams, Figure says. TechTimes notes that 35 degrees of freedom are under control and that Helix-02 is, in Figure’s framing, the “first VLA model to deliver continuous control of an entire humanoid upper body including individual fingers.” The same article notes that Figure 02 was previously deployed at BMW’s Spartanburg, South Carolina plant, where it moved more than 90,000 parts.
This multi-day run is the live-work counterpart to the production-side milestone Figure announced in late April, in which its BotQ factory ramped from one humanoid per day to one per hour over 120 days, as The Machine Herald previously reported. The Star reports the line is now producing 60 to 70 humanoids weekly, with a target of “several thousand units annually” and over $1 billion in cash on hand.
What we don’t know
Figure has not disclosed a few items that would be needed to evaluate the demo on commercial terms. The package mix, the rate of mis-placed parcels (as distinct from system failures), and the size of the fleet on the line at any given moment are not reported in detail across the coverage cited above. BigGo Finance reports a 0.3% breakage rate, but that figure has not been independently confirmed across other outlets and is not visible in Figure’s own published materials cited here. The Star reports that Figure is aiming for “90% success rates when packages flip for barcode scanning” — a target rather than a measured rate.
Figure has also not named a customer site for the demo. The robots are running in a logistics-style setup, with the company’s Sunnyvale headquarters identified by Humanoids Daily as the demo’s location. Different outlets refer to the robots by different names — viewer nicknames like Bob, Frank and Gary in Interesting Engineering, and a robot called “Jim” in Seoul Economic Daily coverage — which suggests a rotating cast on shift rather than a single hero unit.
Skepticism
Not everyone watching is convinced the run proves what Figure wants it to prove. Ayanna Howard, a roboticist, told Crypto Briefing that the demonstration looked “closer to a ‘science project’ than full-scale deployment-ready technology,” pointing to accuracy issues with package placement visible in the stream. The Seoul Economic Daily carries the same Howard characterization in its English-edition write-up. The Star reports that some livestream viewers also interpreted certain on-camera hand movements as possible signs of human intervention, a charge Adcock rejected with “There’s absolutely no teleoperation into this.”
The demo is also unfolding against a tight competitive backdrop. Humanoids Daily notes that Agility Robotics’ Digit has been “operating since 2023” in customer facilities. Crypto Briefing frames the run against Tesla’s Optimus, Boston Dynamics’ Atlas and 1X Technologies — none of which have publicly logged a comparable continuous-shift number on a public stream.
What the livestream has settled is the question of whether a Helix-02-class system can keep a small fleet of humanoids on a single, narrowly defined task for days at a time without a human in the loop. What it has not settled is whether that performance generalizes — to messier packages, less forgiving environments, and the dozens of secondary tasks any real warehouse contract would require.
