Oxford Researchers Cut Lithium-Ion Battery Resistance by 40 Percent With a New Binder Visualization Technique

Researchers at the University of Oxford have developed a patent-pending technique to visualize the polymer binders inside lithium-ion battery anodes at the nanoscale — and used the insight to reduce the internal ionic resistance of experimental electrodes by up to 40 percent. The findings, published February 17 in Nature Communications, could help manufacturers produce batteries that charge faster and last longer, including the cells that power today’s electric vehicles.

Polymer binders are the adhesive materials that hold the active particles in a battery electrode together. Despite accounting for less than 5 percent of electrode weight, they “strongly influence mechanical strength, electrical and ionic conductivity, and how long a battery can operate through repeated charge cycles,” according to ScienceDaily.
The Oxford team attached traceable silver and bromine markers to two common binder types — cellulose- and latex-based materials — used in graphite and silicon anodes. The labeled binders emit characteristic X-rays detectable by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, or reflect high-energy electrons detectable by energy-selective backscattered electron imaging. This produces detailed element-location maps at resolutions previously unavailable for this class of material, ScienceDaily reports.
Dr. Stanislaw Zankowski, the lead author, said: “This staining technique opens up an entirely new toolbox for understanding how modern binders behave during electrode manufacturing.”
The technique detected carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) layers just 10 nanometers thick and captured structures spanning four orders of magnitude within single images, according to ScienceDaily. Imaging revealed that initially uniform CMC coatings fragment into uneven, patchy layers during electrode processing — a degradation the researchers linked to reduced conductivity and cycle durability.
By adjusting slurry mixing and drying procedures based on what the imaging revealed, the team reduced the internal ionic resistance of experimental electrodes by as much as 40 percent, as ScienceDaily reports. Lower ionic resistance is a direct enabler of faster charging.
Professor Patrick Grant, co-author at Oxford’s Department of Materials, said: “This multidisciplinary effort spanning chemistry, electron microscopy, electrochemical testing, and modelling has resulted in an innovative imaging approach that will help us to understand key surface processes that affect battery longevity and performance.”
The technique works with standard graphite electrodes and advanced materials including silicon and SiOx, making it applicable to both current lithium-ion chemistries and next-generation anode designs, ScienceDaily notes.
The work was supported by the Faraday Institution’s Nextrode project and has drawn interest from major battery producers and electric vehicle manufacturers, ScienceDaily reports, though no specific companies were named.

The study is at the laboratory stage. No commercial timeline has been announced, and the research does not specify what level of binder-distribution improvement would translate the 40 percent laboratory resistance reduction into a comparable gain in a production-grade battery cell.
