GitHub Copilot for Eclipse Goes Open Source Under MIT, Six Weeks After Microsoft Signaled the Move
Microsoft open-sourced its Eclipse IDE Copilot plugin on May 21, releasing roughly 15,000 lines of Java under MIT and drawing 1,200+ stars within hours.

Microsoft has open-sourced the GitHub Copilot plugin for Eclipse, releasing the full client-side Java codebase under the MIT license. The move, announced officially via the GitHub Changelog on May 21, 2026, was telegraphed six weeks earlier when Jialuo Gan, a Program Manager at Microsoft, wrote on the Microsoft for Java Developers blog that open sourcing would happen “in the coming weeks.” The repository is now publicly available at github.com/microsoft/copilot-for-eclipse.
What Was Open Sourced
The release covers the client-side integration layer that connects Eclipse with GitHub’s Copilot API — roughly 15,000 lines of Java, according to Windows News, split across core modules for suggestion fetching, telemetry, authentication, and UI rendering. The open-sourced repository includes code completion (inline ghost text), Next Edit Suggestions, chat functionality and conversation flow, agent mode with multistep agentic workflows, skills and prompt file discovery, Bring Your Own Key (BYOK) support, and Model Context Protocol (MCP) integration, as listed in the GitHub Changelog announcement.
What was not included is the Copilot inference stack itself. The server-side model and suggestion-generation logic remain proprietary; as Windows News notes, community commentary quickly described the AI model as “still a black box.” An active GitHub Copilot subscription is still required to use the plugin, a point Microsoft explicitly confirmed in the April 8 pre-announcement.
The repository’s latest release at the time of open sourcing was version 0.18.0, tagged on May 20, 2026, the day before the announcement, per the repository’s release history. The plugin is implemented in Java at 99.3% of the codebase.
Why Now
Microsoft cited consistent community demand as the driver. “The team received consistent community requests to open source the project,” Jialuo Gan wrote, adding that “core interaction patterns and integration approaches have matured sufficiently to enable community collaboration.”
The GitHub Changelog framed the decision around the IDE’s heritage: “By open sourcing the plugin, we’re inviting the community to explore, learn from, and contribute to how AI-powered developer experiences are built inside Eclipse,” the announcement reads.
The move follows a pattern in the Copilot product line. According to Windows News, which compared the timelines, the VS Code Copilot extension went open source in 2024 (also under MIT, where it spawned the Continue.dev project), the JetBrains extension followed in 2025, and the Visual Studio extension was open sourced in 2025 as well. The Eclipse plugin is the most recent IDE front-end to join the open-source track.
Community Reception
Developers moved quickly once the repository went live. Windows News reported that the repository attracted more than 1,200 stars and 90 forks within hours of the announcement. One contributor submitted a patch demonstrating a 30% latency reduction through a Jetty-based implementation, and a separate fork added support for Ollama, the local-model runtime, as an alternative backend.
The GitHub Changelog announcement named five early contributors who had access before the public release: @iloveeclipse, @travkin79, @rsd-darshan, @arpitjain099, and @raghucssit.
Community inspection of the codebase also surfaced previously undocumented behavior. Windows News noted a local caching layer for recent suggestions that had not been disclosed in plugin documentation, stored initially in a plaintext SQLite database. An encrypted cache option was subsequently added but is not mandatory. Telemetry was found to strip file paths and variable names before transmission, though metadata is sent in plaintext.
Installation Context
The plugin currently ranks first among 605 plugins by recent installations on the Eclipse Marketplace, with 15,649 installations recorded for May 2026. It supports Java, Python, JavaScript, and C++, and is compatible with Eclipse versions 2024-03 (4.31) through 2025-12 (4.38).
What We Don’t Know
Microsoft has not disclosed how many Eclipse users have an active Copilot subscription, or what fraction of the plugin’s 15,649 monthly installations come from individual developers versus enterprise seats. The Microsoft for Java Developers blog announced plans to publish a contributor guide and code of conduct but gave no specific target date. Whether community forks integrating alternative AI backends — such as the Ollama fork that emerged within hours — will be accepted upstream or remain separate projects is also unclear.
The upcoming usage-based billing model, referenced in version 0.18.0’s release notes per the repository changelog, will affect how subscription costs are calculated for heavy agentic workflows, though pricing specifics have not been announced.
