The reactor the work is meant to support, Thorizon One, is rated at 250 MWt and 100 MWe, with construction planned to begin around 2030, according to World Nuclear News. On its own technology page, Thorizon describes the first full-scale plant as delivering 100 MW of electricity to the end user and says molten salt “allows significantly more energy to be extracted from nuclear fuel, including from nuclear waste, while operating at low pressure for enhanced safety.” The company says its design relies on “patented fuel cartridges” that “divide the reactor core into smaller, standardized modules,” which are replaced every five to 10 years.
The waste-burning ambition is central to how the project is framed. The commercial timeline is aggressive for a reactor concept that has never been built at scale in Europe, and the milestones beyond the test rig remain forward-looking. The Dutch Institute for Fundamental Energy Research frames DICE as an early materials-qualification step rather than a demonstration of a working reactor, and the central 2034 commercial date reported by World Nuclear News depends on financing, licensing, and the demonstration phases that still lie ahead. The published materials reviewed here do not detail the regulatory approvals the project will need, nor the full cost of building Thorizon One itself, as distinct from the 8 million euro test facility.
Molten salt reactors have a long research history but no commercial operating record, and the corrosion and materials questions DICE is designed to investigate are among the reasons the technology has not yet been deployed.
