Aeolus comprises four instruments, according to NASA: a Doppler Wind and Temperature Sounder (DWTS-Ozone), a Thermal Limb Sounder (TLS), a Surface Radiometric Sensor Package (SuRSeP), and a Wide-Field Context Camera (WFCC). Together, the suite is built to study temperature, dust, wind, and cloud conditions on the Red Planet, according to Scientific American, which reported that the goal of the mission is to gather data that could one day help reduce risk to landings on Mars, both crewed and uncrewed.
The deal is notable for the launch provider. Relativity Space, led by former Google chief executive Eric Schmidt since March 2025, plans to fly the orbiter on its two-stage, reusable Terran R rocket, whose debut voyage is targeted for late 2026, according to Scientific American.
