Overview

Square Enix used Summer Game Fest to reveal Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the third and final entry in its Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy. According to RPG Site, the game was announced during Summer Game Fest Live as “the third and final entry in the epic, critically acclaimed Final Fantasy VII Remake Series.” Kotaku reported that the publisher “finally revealed the third and final chapter in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy” at the show.

The reveal ends years of speculation over the title and timing of the closing installment, which picks up after 2024’s Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

What We Know

Release window. Engadget reported that “Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will launch across all platforms in Spring 2027,” adding that “the final chapter will drop simultaneously on PS5, Switch 2, Xbox and PC.” TweakTown similarly noted the game “will launch Spring 2027, with a simultaneous cross-platform release on consoles and PC, including Xbox and even the Nintendo Switch 2.”

Platforms. Per RPG Site, Revelation is set for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, the Epic Games Store, and Xbox PC. That marks a sharp departure from the first two entries, which launched as PlayStation timed exclusives. As previously reported, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth had already broken from that pattern earlier this month by arriving on Switch 2 and Xbox.

Theme. The finale centers on the idea of resolve. Kotaku reported that “the theme of Revelation is…actually ‘resolve,’ a different word, with the main cast steeling themselves for the final battle.” Director Naoki Hamaguchi framed the project in those terms during the presentation, telling the audience, “I too have carried a promise in my heart in this journey, the resolve to see this series through to the very end,” according to TweakTown.

Gameplay. Both outlets highlighted the return of the airship Highwind as a traversal tool. Engadget described “the iconic airship Highwind in action, with a new seamless integration between navigating the overworld onboard and on ground, with a parachute,” while Kotaku noted that “at any time in the open world you can jump out of the Highwind and descend from the sky to the ground via parachute.” TweakTown reported that footage showed players exploring the series’ “most expansive open world yet.”

The combat roster expands as well. Engadget reported “a brief view of Cid and Vincent joining party battles properly for the first time,” and introduced a new equipment system: “A new equipment system, called FITS, will apparently unlock new movesets and battle boosts.”

The presentation. Kotaku reported that director Naoki Hamaguchi appeared onstage alongside Matt Mercer, the English voice of Vincent Valentine. The reveal had been telegraphed in advance; in April, Push Square quoted Hamaguchi as saying, “We know many fans are eagerly waiting, and preparations toward the announcement are steadily underway. Please look forward to it just a little longer.”

What We Don’t Know

Square Enix did not narrow the spring 2027 window to a specific date. The publisher has also not detailed how Revelation will handle save or story continuity from the earlier games across the multiple platforms it is launching on simultaneously, nor disclosed pricing or any edition lineup. The full playable roster beyond the characters shown in the reveal footage was not confirmed at the show.

Analysis

The simultaneous multi-platform launch is the most consequential break from how the trilogy began. Where the first two parts leaned on PlayStation exclusivity windows, Revelation arrives everywhere at once — a strategy Square Enix had already begun applying to Rebirth’s wider re-release. Pairing the finale with a day-one Switch 2, Xbox, and PC release maximizes the addressable audience for the trilogy’s conclusion rather than gating it behind a single console first.
