China's Shenlong Space Plane Releases a Mystery Object in Orbit on Its Fourth Mission, Commercial Radar Firm LeoLabs Reports
LeoLabs says it detected and cataloged an object released by China's secretive Shenlong space plane, repeating a pattern from earlier missions.

China’s secretive Shenlong reusable space plane appears to have released an unidentified object into orbit during its fourth mission, according to commercial orbital-tracking firm LeoLabs. As reported by SpaceNews, LeoLabs stated it detected an “unknown object in the vicinity of the Chinese Shenlong reusable spaceplane” at 10:30 p.m. Eastern on June 21 (0230 UTC, June 22) in a post on the social platform X. The detection adds another entry to a years-long record of unexplained deployments from the program, which China has never publicly confirmed.
What We Know
The object was first picked up by LeoLabs’ Kiwi Space Radar tracking radar in New Zealand and did not correlate to any other object in the firm’s catalog, according to SpaceNews. Space.com reported the same timestamp in coordinated universal time, noting that LeoLabs detected the unknown object “in the vicinity of the Chinese Shenlong reusable space plane” at 02:30 UTC on 22 June 2026.
LeoLabs followed the initial detection with further tracking before drawing a conclusion. “Following additional observations across our global network and analysis via LeoLabs Delta, we have independently cataloged this object and assessed with high confidence that it was released from the Chinese spaceplane,” the company said, in a statement carried by both SpaceNews and Gizmodo. LeoLabs separately characterized the event as consistent with the program’s history, saying the activity “is consistent with sub-satellite deployments conducted by the space plane in previous missions,” according to Space.com.
The spacecraft began this flight earlier in the year. A Long March 2F rocket launched the orbital space plane into low Earth orbit from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in the Gobi Desert on Feb. 7 local time, SpaceNews reported, after which the spacecraft raised its orbit to a roughly circular 593-kilometer altitude. Space.com described the flight as Shenlong’s fourth mission.
The deployment fits a now-familiar pattern. According to SpaceNews, the detection “follows a pattern of China’s spaceplane releasing subsatellites after reaching orbit,” and the space plane’s second and third orbital missions “included the main spacecraft appearing to conduct rendezvous and proximity operations (RPOs) with the released objects.” Gizmodo noted that Shenlong released unidentified objects during its prior missions, “some of which even emitted various signals while in orbit,” and that China has not announced or confirmed the deployment of these objects even after they were cataloged by the U.S. military.
Beijing has offered little about the mission’s purpose. The official Chinese description states that the experimental craft “will conduct technological verification for reusable spacecraft, providing technical support for the peaceful use of space,” per SpaceNews.
What We Don’t Know
Key details about the new object remain undetermined. As of the time of reporting, the object had not yet appeared in the Space-track catalog maintained by the U.S. Space Force, according to SpaceNews. The object’s size, function, and intended purpose are unknown, and China has not commented on the deployment.
Analysis
Shenlong belongs to a small club of secretive, reusable orbital vehicles. The roughly circular 593-kilometer orbit means “the spacecraft could be somewhat similar in size and function to the U.S. Space Force’s X-37B spaceplane,” SpaceNews noted. The United States operates its own counterpart: Gizmodo reported that the Boeing X-37 experimental vehicle launched on its eighth mission, OTV-8, on August 21, 2025.
The episode also underscores how much of the public picture of secretive military spaceflight now depends on commercial sensor networks. The detection, cataloging, and assessment in this case came not from a government agency but from LeoLabs and its global radar network, with U.S. government catalogs lagging behind at the time of reporting.
