Cainiao Debuts ZeeBot, a Rack-Climbing Warehouse Robot That Doubles Storage and Retrieval Productivity in Live China Operations

Cainiao, the logistics arm of Alibaba, has launched ZeeBot, a warehouse robot that both travels across the floor and climbs storage racks. According to Cainiao, the system “increases storage and retrieval productivity by 100%” in a live deployment, effectively doubling throughput compared with the operation it replaced. The robot debuted at the MODEX 2026 materials-handling trade show, Robotics 24/7 reported.

ZeeBot is designed to collapse two jobs usually handled by separate machines: moving goods horizontally across a facility and storing or retrieving them vertically. Per Cainiao, the robot travels at up to 4 meters per second on the warehouse floor and can climb to the height of a five-level rack in as little as 10 seconds.
Beyond raw speed, the company says the design changes how much can be stored in a given footprint. Cainiao states that ZeeBot “increases storage density, improving space utilization by 40%.”
The productivity figures come from an operating site rather than a lab. According to Cainiao, more than 100 units are already operating in a cross-border logistics warehouse in Dongguan, Guangdong, supporting a leading global cross-border e-commerce platform.
Bi Jianghua, Vice President of Cainiao and General Manager of Logistics Technology, framed the launch as a step beyond automating individual tasks. “Logistics workflows are long and complex. Traditional automation can deliver efficiency at individual steps, but the end-to-end process is often fragmented,” he said, according to Cainiao.
The company says ZeeBot will next be rolled out to Cainiao’s warehouses in Europe and North America, per Cainiao.

By giving a single machine both functions, Cainiao is betting that eliminating that handoff is where the throughput gains hide. Whether the doubled productivity Cainiao reports in Dongguan holds up across the higher-cost, differently regulated warehouses of Europe and North America will be the real test of the design.
