Nvidia became the No. 1 data center Ethernet switch vendor by revenue for the first time in the first quarter of 2026, according to IDC figures reported by SDxCentral. Nvidia’s data center Ethernet switch revenue surged 192.7% year over year to $2.1 billion, giving it a 21.5% share of the segment and moving it ahead of longtime leader Arista Networks.

“Nvidia’s rise to #1 in data center Ethernet switching in a single year is one of the most significant vendor landscape shifts IDC has tracked in enterprise networking,” said Paul Nicholson, research vice president for cloud and data center networks at IDC, as quoted by SDxCentral.

What We Know

Nvidia’s $2.1 billion in quarterly data center Ethernet switch revenue placed it narrowly ahead of Arista Networks, which held 20.7% of the data center segment, according to SDxCentral. Arista’s revenues grew 37.3% year over year, while Cisco’s data center revenues rose 43.0%, the outlet reported.

The reshuffling came as the underlying market expanded sharply. The data center portion of the Ethernet switch market grew 61.0% year over year in the first quarter of 2026 to reach $10.0 billion, according to SDxCentral, with 800G switches accounting for 35.8% of data center revenues. Across the broader Ethernet switch market, including campus and enterprise gear, IDC put worldwide revenue at $15.4 billion in the quarter, up 39.8% year over year, according to the firm’s report.

IDC attributed Nvidia’s gains to its Spectrum-X platform, which the firm describes as an end-to-end AI networking solution that integrates Spectrum Ethernet switches with BlueField DPUs and Nvidia LinkX cables, purpose-built for large-scale GPU clusters, according to the report. Nvidia sells the switching as part of that bundle rather than as standalone hardware. “Spectrum-X’s integrated GPU-plus-networking design is winning AI factory deals that incumbent networking vendors cannot match with standalone hardware alone,” Nicholson said, as quoted by SDxCentral.

The result underscores how quickly AI infrastructure spending has reshaped a networking market long dominated by merchant-silicon switch makers. Nvidia’s move into networking builds on its dominance in AI accelerators, letting it sell compute and interconnect together. Rivals have been racing to counter that bundle with high-capacity merchant silicon; Cisco, for instance, previously unveiled its 102.4 Tbps Silicon One G300 chip to challenge Nvidia and Broadcom in AI data center networking.

What We Don’t Know

IDC’s figures cover a single quarter, and it is not yet clear whether Nvidia’s lead is durable or whether it reflects lumpy, deal-driven purchasing tied to specific AI cluster build-outs. The competitive response from Arista, Cisco, and merchant-silicon suppliers such as Broadcom could shift shares in subsequent quarters.

It is also unclear how much of Nvidia’s switch revenue is attributable to captive demand from its own GPU customers versus standalone networking wins, given that IDC emphasizes the platform is sold as an integrated GPU-plus-networking package rather than a standalone switching architecture.

Analysis

The data point crystallizes a structural change in data center networking: the buying decision is increasingly made at the level of the AI cluster, not the switch. When an operator commits to Nvidia GPUs for an AI factory, the Spectrum-X fabric that connects them arrives in the same purchase order. That bundling is precisely what IDC credits for Nvidia’s rise, and it is difficult for incumbents to match with switching hardware alone. Whether Arista and Cisco can defend their positions will likely depend less on raw switch capacity than on how tightly they can couple their networking into the AI compute stacks their customers are actually buying.
