Focused Energy Raises $240 Million Series A for Laser Fusion, With RWE Backing a Demonstration Plant at a Former German Reactor Site

The raise adds to a run of large fusion financings The Machine Herald has tracked, including Inertia Enterprises’ licensing partnership with Lawrence Livermore and the U.S. Department of Energy’s approval of Xcimer’s Athena design.
What We Know
The round brings the company’s total private capital raised to $300 million, and the startup has also received $200 million in grants, according to TechCrunch. The Next Web reports the round makes Focused Energy “one of the most heavily funded fusion startups in the world at approximately $500 million in total funding,” with participation from SPRIND, the German Federal Agency for Breakthrough Innovation, Prime Movers Lab, and the European Innovation Council Fund.
RWE, for its part, said it “has expanded its investment in the Darmstadt-based laser fusion company Focused Energy by a further 60 million euros,” following its initial investment in October 2025, according to the utility’s press release.
Focused Energy is developing a reactor that uses lasers to compress fusion fuel, an inertial confinement approach, according to TechCrunch. The lasers fire on a fuel target, which compresses to create conditions ripe for fusion. The company uses a “direct drive” scheme, in which the lasers compress the fuel pellet directly rather than through a hohlraum. The approach builds on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, whose December 2022 experiment first demonstrated net energy gain, as reported by The Next Web. The link is also personnel-level: Debbie Callahan, who helped design the fuel target at the NIF, joined Focused Energy in December as its chief strategy officer, according to TechCrunch.
The RWE relationship is meant to solve siting as much as financing. Focused Energy plans to build its first demonstration system, called Lighthouse, at the site of a decommissioned nuclear fission power plant in Germany operated by RWE, according to TechCrunch. RWE identified that site as Biblis, saying “the Biblis site would be able to take on a key role in the further development of fusion technology in Germany,” and noted that, in collaboration with the state of Hesse and other partners, Focused Energy is participating in the German government’s current call for proposals for a laser fusion hub, per the RWE release.
Executives framed the raise around Germany’s industrial position. RWE chief executive Dr. Markus Krebber said, “Thanks to its excellent research ecosystem and innovative start-ups such as Focused Energy – one of the leading companies in the field of laser fusion – Germany is well-positioned to take a leading global role in nuclear fusion,” according to the company. Focused Energy chief executive Thomas Forner said, “This is bringing fusion energy in Germany and Europe into a new era,” per the same release.
What We Don’t Know
The engineering gap between a single laboratory demonstration and a power plant remains large. The NIF fires approximately 400 shots per year, but a commercial reactor will need to fire 10 shots per second, or roughly 864,000 per day, according to The Next Web. Focused Energy has not published a public schedule for reaching that repetition rate.
The raise also lands in a crowded and well-capitalized field. A direct competitor, Inertia Enterprises, raised a $450 million Series A in February for its own inertial confinement reactor, according to The Next Web.
Analysis
The deal is notable less for its size than for its structure. By taking an incumbent utility as a strategic investor and anchoring the demonstration system at a decommissioned nuclear site RWE already controls, Focused Energy is attempting to fold two of fusion’s hardest non-physics problems — siting and grid proximity — into the financing itself. Whether laser fusion’s physics can be industrialized at the shot rates a plant demands is the open question that no amount of capital settles on its own.
