Oratomic Raises $300 Million Series A to Build a Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computer Needing Just 20,000 Qubits

SiliconANGLE reported that the syndicate also included Formation, Nebular, and more than half a dozen others, while The Quantum Insider named additional participants as David and Scott Aaronson, Les Kohn, Baiju Bhatt, Infleqtion, Genius Ventures, 7i Capital, and Global Frontier Investments.
Oratomic is led by Chief Executive Dolev Bluvstein, according to SiliconANGLE. Explaining the company’s founding to TechCrunch, Bluvstein said, “You would have not previously been able to convince any of us to start a quantum computing company, because we just thought it was way too far away,” adding, “Only when we made this recent breakthrough did we simultaneously all change our minds.”
That breakthrough centers on how many qubits a useful, fault-tolerant quantum computer actually requires. “The difference is that we need roughly 10,000 to 20,000 qubits to build a useful computer, and we have already experimentally demonstrated all of the core components required of that computer at a slightly smaller scale,” Bluvstein told TechCrunch. Co-founder Manuel Endres has already demonstrated arrays containing roughly 6,000 trapped atomic qubits, according to The Quantum Insider.
Oratomic plans to use the new capital to scale its quantum hardware and accelerate its path to fault tolerance and error correction, according to SiliconANGLE. The Quantum Insider reported the company plans to expand quantum hardware fabrication, accelerate research into fault-tolerant quantum computing architectures, and grow its physics and hardware engineering teams. The $300 million figure and the July announcement were independently confirmed by Quantum Computing Report.
Bluvstein positioned Oratomic against the broader field of well-funded quantum efforts pursuing different hardware bets. He told TechCrunch that Oratomic shouldn’t be compared to PsiQuantum, a startup valued at $7 billion last September that is also bypassing the current noisy intermediate-scale quantum stage but is aiming to deliver a viable, million-qubit quantum computer by the end of next year. SiliconANGLE named Oratomic’s closest rivals as Atom Computing, which is also pursuing neutral-atom hardware and has raised $300 million, and QuEra Computing.
Khosla Ventures characterized its stake in stark terms, saying in comments reported by The Quantum Insider, “We at @khoslaventures made the largest initial investment yet, as we did in OpenAI, into @TeamOratomic after we looked at a dozen Quantum starts in a decade.”
