Google's Intrinsic Unveils an AI-Powered Modular Robot Workcell, With Foxconn Set to Pilot It for Assembly

Intrinsic, the artificial intelligence robotics software company that Google LLC folded into its core operations in February, unveiled a new modular robot workcell during the Automate 2026 trade show, according to SiliconANGLE. The product, called the Intrinsic Intelligence Cell, runs on the company’s IntrinsicOS platform and is designed to work as a reference design that manufacturers, machine builders and systems integrators can adapt for their own factory floors, according to SiliconANGLE and Robotics & Automation News. Electronics manufacturer Foxconn plans to pilot a customized version of the workcell for assembly work at its production facilities later this year, according to Intrinsic’s own announcement.
What We Know
Intrinsic was founded in 2021, and Google incorporated it into its core operations in February to accelerate the development of “physical AI” — systems that use sensors, actuators and control systems to perceive, reason, act and learn in real-world environments, according to SiliconANGLE.
On the Automate 2026 show floor, Intrinsic demonstrated the workcell performing electronics assembly using a FANUC industrial robot, according to SiliconANGLE and Robotics & Automation News. The company said it is already working with CNC automation specialists Trinity Automation and MartinSystems to integrate the platform, according to SiliconANGLE and Robotics & Automation News.
Intrinsic pitched the system’s central selling point as speed of deployment: traditional robotics programming that requires “hundreds of hours of coding labor and hardware knowledge” can instead be handled through “a few clicks” in a drag-and-drop interface, according to SiliconANGLE. Intrinsic had already announced a partnership with Foxconn in 2025 to explore mass deployment of robots on assembly lines, and the new pilot builds on that relationship, according to SiliconANGLE. A customized version of the Intelligence Cell built for electronics assembly is scheduled to run at Foxconn production facilities later this year, Intrinsic said in a company blog post, a timeline corroborated by Robotics & Automation News.
Intrinsic Chief Executive Wendy Tan White framed the launch around the economics of manufacturing. “The intersection of AI with modular production is going to unlock new value and operating models across the industry,” she said, according to Intrinsic. “When both physical workcells and software-defined robotics enable more flexibility, it allows manufacturers of all sizes to build in new ways, and fundamentally shifts the economics of production.”
Alongside the product launch, Intrinsic disclosed results from an ongoing “AI for Industry Challenge,” a competition aimed at drawing software engineers into robotics. The challenge drew more than 5,000 registrations across 1,600 teams spanning more than 115 countries, with eight teams achieving near-perfect scores in the simulation evaluation phase, according to Intrinsic and Robotics & Automation News. Thirty-one teams have advanced to a validation phase using the company’s Flowstate development environment, and the top ten finalists will remotely deploy their solutions to a physical workcell at Intrinsic’s California headquarters for real-world testing, according to Intrinsic. Of the participants, 93% are proficient in Python, 73% have experience with ROS, and only 14% currently work in robotics, according to Intrinsic and Robotics & Automation News. Intrinsic said it is building the platform with more than 1.3 million ROS developers in mind, according to Intrinsic.
What We Don’t Know
Intrinsic has not disclosed a specific date for the Foxconn pilot beyond “later this year,” nor has it published pricing or availability details for the Intelligence Cell reference design outside of its trade-show demonstration and named integrator partnerships. The company also has not said how many additional manufacturers beyond Trinity Automation, MartinSystems and Foxconn are currently testing the platform.
