NASA Reassigns SunRISE Solar-Storm Mission From ULA's Vulcan Centaur to SpaceX Falcon Heavy
NASA moved its six-satellite SunRISE heliophysics mission off Vulcan Centaur onto a Falcon Heavy rideshare, months after a Vulcan booster anomaly grounded the rocket's national-security flights.

NASA has reassigned its SunRISE heliophysics mission from United Launch Alliance’s Vulcan Centaur rocket to a SpaceX Falcon Heavy, according to a NASA blog post published July 13. The mission will now fly as a rideshare from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, sponsored by the U.S. Space Force’s Space Systems Command, after originally being booked on Vulcan Centaur, the agency said. The Register and Space.com both confirmed the switch, with Space.com noting in a July 23 report that “Vulcan is losing more launches to ULA’s competitors.”
What We Know
SunRISE — short for Sun Radio Interferometer Space Experiment — consists of six small satellites that will operate together as a single radio-telescope array positioned slightly above geosynchronous orbit, at roughly 22,000 miles (35,000 kilometers) in altitude, according to NASA. The Register reported that the satellites will fly approximately 10 kilometers apart, each carrying four radio antennas extending 2.5 meters, and that the spacecraft finished construction in 2023.
The array is designed to detect radio bursts generated by accelerated particles leaving the Sun’s corona, according to NASA. Those radio signals reach Earth ahead of the associated solar energetic particles, and NASA says tracking the bursts could improve prediction and mitigation of the kind of solar particle events that can damage satellites and endanger astronauts. The SmallSats have already completed assembly and testing at Utah State University’s Space Dynamics Laboratory in Logan, where they will remain in storage until a launch period is confirmed, NASA said. The agency has not yet set a new launch date, saying only that it will share updated timing in the future.
SunRISE is managed as a Mission of Opportunity within the Heliophysics Division of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate and falls under the agency’s Explorers Program, which is run by NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, according to NASA. The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor leads the science investigation and hosts the science operations center, while JPL, a division of Caltech in Pasadena, California, manages the project and hosts mission operations. NASA’s own mission page lists SunRISE’s expected operating duration at 12 months.
The reassignment comes months after a Vulcan Centaur booster problem disrupted the rocket’s national-security launch manifest. As The Machine Herald previously reported, a solid rocket motor suffered a significant performance anomaly during the USSF-87 mission on February 12, 2026, prompting the Space Force to pause Vulcan’s national-security launches while the cause was investigated.
