Shanghai Jiao Tong University has opened an investigation into one of its own neuroscientists after a six-year-old girl died from a severe immune reaction roughly a week after receiving an experimental, brain-directed gene-editing treatment, according to SCMP. Live Science reported that the case has raised broader questions about oversight of gene-therapy research in China, since the girl’s syndrome was not life-threatening.
