GNOME 50 Ships as the First Major Desktop Environment to Fully Remove X11, Ending a 40-Year Display Server Era

GNOME 50 completely removes X11 from Mutter, Shell, and GDM, making Wayland the sole display protocol. The release stabilizes VRR and fractional scaling, and will ship in Ubuntu 26.04 LTS and Fedora 44.

The GNOME Project released version 50.0 of its desktop environment on March 18, completing a transition that has been in motion for over a decade. GNOME 50 is the first major Linux desktop environment to fully excise the X Window System backend from its core components, making Wayland the sole display protocol for GNOME sessions.

The release removes the X11 backend from Mutter, GNOME’s window manager and compositor, as well as from GNOME Shell and GDM, the display manager responsible for login sessions. Features including XDMCP (X Display Manager Control Protocol) and the system-wide X server have been dropped entirely. There is no fallback session and no legacy mode: GNOME 50 boots directly into Wayland.

Legacy X11 applications will continue to function through XWayland, the compatibility layer that allows traditional X11 clients to run inside a Wayland session. GNOME developer Jordan Petridis wrote in the project’s X11 session removal FAQ that “XWayland will be around with us for decades,” and that “any future development is a dead-end and shortcomings can’t be addressed without breaking X11,” explaining the rationale for the removal.

The decision was coordinated across multiple organizations. Fedora approved removing GNOME on Xorg for Fedora 43 in May 2025, and Ubuntu publicly announced matching the upstream decision shortly afterward. GNOME 49, released in September 2025, disabled the X11 session by default as a transitional step, while GNOME 50 completes the removal.

Beyond X11 Removal

GNOME 50 delivers several Wayland-native improvements that were previously treated as experimental. Variable refresh rate (VRR) support in Mutter is now stable, enabling smoother visual experiences on compatible displays without requiring manual opt-in. Fractional scaling, which allows non-integer display scaling ratios such as 125 or 150 percent, has also graduated from experimental status.

The release adds HDR screen sharing support through GNOME Remote Desktop, which now supports explicit DMA buffer synchronization and enables zero-copy Vulkan and VA-API rendering by default. Additional remote desktop improvements include camera redirection, Kerberos authentication, HiDPI support, and connection throttling.

GNOME’s file manager, Nautilus, gains configurable grid view captions that display up to three additional rows of information beneath file icons, including size, type, modification date, owner, and permissions. The desktop also adds a new SDR-native color mode and improved NVIDIA GPU performance.

Parental controls now support daily screen time limits and bedtime settings for children’s accounts, while GDM introduces a unified authentication mechanism that runs multiple authentication methods simultaneously.

Distribution Adoption

GNOME 50 will serve as the default desktop environment for two major upcoming releases: Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, scheduled for April 2026, and Fedora Workstation 44, also expected in mid-April. Ubuntu 26.04 is a long-term support release that will be maintained for five years, meaning GNOME 50’s Wayland-only architecture will become the baseline for enterprise and institutional Linux deployments.

KDE Plasma, the other leading Linux desktop environment, is following a similar but slower trajectory. KDE has announced plans to drop X11 support in Plasma 6.8, expected in early 2027, giving its user base an additional year of transition time.

The X Window System dates to 1984, when it was developed at MIT as a network-transparent windowing system for Unix workstations. X11, the current protocol version, was released in 1987 and has served as the default display system for Linux desktops since the operating system’s earliest graphical environments. Wayland, first released in 2008, was designed as a simpler replacement that eliminates X11’s client-server architecture in favor of direct communication between applications and the compositor, reducing latency and improving security by preventing applications from reading input intended for other windows.
