Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Approaches April Release with Rust-Based Core Utilities, Post-Quantum SSH, and a Wayland-Only Desktop
Ubuntu 26.04 LTS enters beta on March 26, shipping Rust-based coreutils and sudo, GNOME 50 without X11, post-quantum SSH, and AMD ROCm in official repositories.
Overview
Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, codenamed Resolute Raccoon, enters its beta phase on March 26, with the final release scheduled for April 23. The codename honors Steve Langasek, a former Debian and Ubuntu release manager who passed away in early 2025. While every LTS release carries weight for the millions of servers, desktops, and cloud instances that depend on its five-year (or longer) support window, the 26.04 cycle is notable for the sheer volume of foundational changes arriving simultaneously. Rust rewrites of core system utilities, a new initial ramdisk infrastructure, the complete removal of X11 from the default desktop, and post-quantum cryptography in SSH represent a generational shift in the distribution’s technical stack.
Rust Replaces GNU at the Foundation
The most symbolically significant change in Ubuntu 26.04 is the default installation of rust-coreutils, a Rust-based reimplementation of the traditional GNU coreutils that provide fundamental commands like ls, cp, mv, cat, and dozens of other utilities that have been implemented in C for decades. The transition began with Ubuntu 25.10, which first shipped the Rust-based replacements alongside the originals, and 26.04 LTS makes them the default for the distribution’s next long-term support cycle.
The rust-coreutils package is based on the uutils project, an open-source effort to rewrite GNU coreutils in Rust with the goal of eliminating entire classes of memory-safety vulnerabilities that have historically affected C-based system utilities. Canonical reports performance improvements in specific tools, with the base64 implementation showing measurable gains. The classic GNU versions remain available in the repositories, and users can switch between implementations if compatibility issues arise.
Alongside coreutils, sudo-rs becomes the default privilege escalation utility, replacing the traditional C-based sudo that has been a cornerstone of Unix-like systems for over four decades. The Rust rewrite, originally developed under the ISRG’s Prossimo memory safety initiative, aims to reduce the attack surface of one of the most security-critical binaries on any Linux system. The original sudo remains available as sudo.ws for users who need features not yet replicated in the Rust version.
A New Boot Infrastructure
Ubuntu 26.04 replaces initramfs-tools, the utility that has generated the initial ramdisk for Ubuntu systems since its earliest releases, with Dracut. The new infrastructure uses systemd within the initial ramdisk and supports capabilities that initramfs-tools did not, including Bluetooth device support during early boot and NVM Express over Fabrics (NVMe-oF). The switch aligns Ubuntu with Fedora and other distributions that have used Dracut for years, and the original initramfs-tools remains available for users who need it.
Kernel crash dumps are now enabled by default, a change aimed at improving the diagnostic data available when systems encounter kernel panics. The distribution also removes support for cgroup version 1, completing a transition to cgroup v2 that has been underway across the Linux ecosystem for several years.
GNOME 50 and the End of X11
Ubuntu 26.04 ships with GNOME 50, the first version of the GNOME desktop to fully remove X11 support from its core components. X11 has been removed from GDM, Mutter, and GNOME Shell, making Wayland the sole display protocol for GNOME sessions. XWayland continues to be installed by default for legacy X11 applications.
GNOME 50 enables Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and fractional scaling by default, features that were previously flagged as experimental. NVIDIA graphics now receive full Wayland support, addressing one of the longest-standing pain points in the Linux desktop ecosystem. The release also introduces parental controls with screen time limits and bedtime schedules, a Reduced Motion accessibility option, and overhauled annotation tools in the Papers document viewer.
On the visual side, Ubuntu 26.04 introduces redesigned folder icons in the Yaru theme with a squatter shape and improved dynamic accent color support. The Yaru GNOME Shell theme has been substantially simplified, removing approximately 5,000 lines of custom overrides to align more closely with upstream GNOME Shell and Adwaita defaults.
Canonical has also replaced several default applications: the terminal emulator is now Ptyxis, the image viewer is Loupe, and the document viewer is Papers.
Post-Quantum Cryptography and Security
OpenSSH in Ubuntu 26.04 enables hybrid post-quantum key exchange using mlkem768x25519 by default, making it one of the first major Linux distributions to ship post-quantum cryptography in its default SSH configuration. The change anticipates the threat of future quantum computers being able to break current key exchange algorithms. SHA-1-based SSHFP DNS records are deprecated.
TPM-backed full-disk encryption is available for desktop installations, and new AppArmor sandboxing profiles provide improved application confinement. SSSD, the system security services daemon, now runs under an unprivileged sssd user instead of root, reducing the impact of potential vulnerabilities in the authentication service.
AMD ROCm Integration for AI Workloads
Canonical has partnered with AMD to package the ROCm compute stack directly in Ubuntu’s official repositories, starting with 26.04. Previously, installing ROCm on Ubuntu required adding third-party repositories and navigating version compatibility issues. The integration means that sudo apt install rocm will be sufficient to set up AMD GPU compute capabilities for AI training, inference, and high-performance computing workloads. The change places AMD’s GPU compute stack on equal footing with NVIDIA’s CUDA, which has been available through Ubuntu’s repositories for several release cycles.
Toolchain and Platform Updates
The development toolchain receives substantial updates across the board. GCC 15.2 becomes the default compiler, up from GCC 14. Python moves to 3.13.9 as the primary version, with Python 3.14 also available. LLVM jumps to version 21, Rust to 1.88, Golang to 1.25, and Zig 0.14.1 is newly available in the repositories. The graphics stack ships Mesa 25.3, and the system library is glibc 2.42.
Ubuntu 26.04 also marks the first official ARM64 Desktop ISO, reflecting the growing adoption of ARM-based hardware for desktop and laptop use. RISC-V support requires compliance with the RVA23S64 ISA profile.
What Remains to Be Seen
The beta release on March 26 will be the first broad public test of these changes in their LTS configuration. Several questions remain open. The rust-coreutils, while passing approximately 500 of 600 GNU test cases when first introduced, may encounter edge cases in the diverse environments that LTS releases are expected to support for a decade or more. Dracut’s replacement of initramfs-tools could affect users with custom boot configurations. And the removal of cgroup v1 will require container orchestration systems that still depend on the older interface to complete their migration.
The sheer number of simultaneous foundational changes in a single LTS release is unusual for Ubuntu, which has historically used interim releases to test disruptive changes before stabilizing them for long-term support. Ubuntu 25.10 served that role for rust-coreutils, sudo-rs, and Dracut, but the combination of all these changes with GNOME 50’s X11 removal, post-quantum SSH, and cgroup v1 deprecation means that 26.04 carries more architectural risk than any LTS since the move to systemd. The five-week window between beta and final release will determine whether that risk has been adequately managed.
