The Scale of Dominance
The numbers are staggering by any historical measure. Before SpaceX began launching Starlink in 2019, the entire world had roughly 2,000 active satellites. In less than seven years, one company has added five times that number. SpaceX has been averaging a Falcon 9 launch every 2.3 days in 2026, with 35 missions completed through mid-March. The Falcon 9 family has now launched 628 times with 625 full mission successes, according to Space.com.
The commercial trajectory points toward further acceleration. SpaceX has regulatory approval to expand Starlink to roughly 42,000 satellites and has applied to the FCC for approval to deploy one million satellites for an orbital AI data center network, as The Machine Herald previously reported. The company plans to begin launching larger Starlink Version 3 satellites aboard Starship in 2026, with forecasts predicting as many as eight Starship launches carrying Starlink payloads this year. The V3 satellites are expected to deliver terabit-level capacity, a generational leap over the current V2 Mini fleet.
Competitors remain far behind. Amazon’s Leo constellation has launched roughly 200 of its planned 7,500 satellites. China’s Qianfan network targets 15,000 satellites, while Guowang aims for 13,000. Europe’s OneWeb operates 654 spacecraft. Globally, 1.7 million satellites have been proposed across all operators.
The Collision Calculus
The operational burden of managing 10,000 active satellites in a shared orbital environment is already significant. Starlink performed approximately 300,000 collision avoidance maneuvers in 2025 alone, nearly 40 per satellite annually, according to Scientific American. Before Starlink, most satellites performed only a handful of such maneuvers over their entire lifetimes.
Incidents have underscored the risks. In July 2024, a 2.5-kilogram piece of a deorbited Starlink satellite struck a Canadian farm. In December 2025, a Starlink satellite exploded in orbit, releasing dozens of debris fragments. The same month, China reported a near-miss between one of its satellites and a Starlink spacecraft. As the constellation grows toward 42,000 or beyond, the frequency of close approaches and the computational complexity of coordinating maneuvers across operators will increase.
Astronomers Sound the Alarm
The impact on ground-based and space-based astronomy is becoming impossible to ignore. A NASA study found that adding 500,000 satellites to low Earth orbit would result in disruptive interference in “almost every image taken by every telescope on Earth, and many images from telescopes in space.” NASA researcher Alejandro Borlaff warned that “there is no place in the sky that won’t have any satellites,” as reported by Scientific American.
Multiple Starlink satellites burn up in Earth’s atmosphere daily as older units are deorbited and replaced. The climatic effects of this continuous metallic ablation in the upper atmosphere are poorly understood, but researchers have raised concerns that the process could be altering stratospheric temperatures and chemistry.
What Remains Unknown
Starlink’s revenue remains undisclosed. SpaceX is privately held and does not publish financial results, making it impossible to assess whether the constellation is profitable at its current scale of 10 million subscribers. Rumors of a Starlink IPO have circulated for years, and prediction markets have shown increased activity around the prospect following the 10,000-satellite milestone.
The regulatory framework for managing a sky dominated by a single operator does not exist. The FCC grants spectrum licenses and orbital debris mitigation requirements, but no international body has the authority to limit the total number of satellites a company can deploy. The International Telecommunication Union coordinates spectrum allocation but lacks enforcement power over orbital population.
Whether SpaceX’s planned Starship-launched V3 satellites, which are significantly larger and heavier than the current fleet, will alter the constellation’s visibility to ground-based observers has not been assessed publicly.
