Overview

The fifth chapter of Deltarune, the episodic role-playing game from Undertale creator Toby Fox, will release on June 24 as a free update for existing owners. According to Nintendo Life, the chapter is coming to Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, and the release date was revealed during the June 2026 Nintendo Direct.

What We Know

The official Deltarune newsletter from Fox states that “DELTARUNE Chapter 5 will launch simultaneously worldwide on all platforms on June 24 at 11:00am EDT,” according to Toby Fox.

The new chapter arrives at no additional cost to people who already own the game. As Nintendo Life put it, “As ever, the next chapter will be a free update to all Deltarune owners.” Nintendo Everything likewise reported that “if you’ve already downloaded the game, this will be available as a free update.”

This distribution model continues the structure Deltarune has used since its commercial launch, in which the base purchase covers the chapters released so far and subsequent chapters are added for free.

Fox said he deliberately kept the marketing restrained ahead of launch. “I want to surprise people playing the Chapter for the first time, so I avoided showing the most exciting moments,” he wrote, per Toby Fox.

What Comes Next

Alongside the Chapter 5 date, Fox offered an unusually concrete look at later installments. “Chapter 6 is developing well,” he wrote, according to Nintendo Life. He added that “this Chapter is easier to make than the others, so the development is going quite fast,” and went further on the pace of the project: “This sounds crazy, but it’s not unrealistic that some staff members may start working on Chapter 7 before the end of the year,” as quoted by Nintendo Life.

What We Don’t Know

Fox has not announced release windows for Chapter 6 or Chapter 7, and his comments frame Chapter 7 work as a possibility rather than a commitment. Neither the total number of planned chapters nor whether the eventual full game will carry a price change has been confirmed in the announcement materials reviewed here.

Analysis

Deltarune’s release cadence is unusual for a commercial game: rather than selling each chapter separately or bundling them into a single delayed launch, Fox has shipped paid chapters in batches while pledging that future chapters reach existing owners for free. The June 24 update extends that pattern, and Fox’s willingness to publicly describe in-progress work on Chapters 6 and 7 suggests the back half of the game is moving faster than its early, multi-year gaps between releases implied.
