SpaceX Debuts Its Disk-Shaped Starfall Reentry Capsule, Built to Return a Ton of Cargo From Orbit

SpaceX launched the first demonstration of a new return capsule called Starfall on June 23, a vehicle designed to bring cargo back from low Earth orbit. According to SpaceNews, the Falcon 9 lifted off at 6:53 a.m. Eastern from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. SpaceX described the spacecraft as a “microgravity lab that researchers and entrepreneurs can leverage to develop their products and innovations,” with the demo’s primary objective being to “demonstrate controlled flight” and perform “a controlled reentry and splashdown in the Pacific Ocean.”
The flight marks SpaceX’s entry into a niche so far occupied mostly by small startups: the business of carrying experiments and manufactured goods to orbit and physically returning them to Earth.
What We Know
Starfall is a disk-shaped capsule. Drawing on SpaceX’s filings with the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, SpaceNews reports the vehicle is “disk-shaped, 0.75 meters tall and 3.1 meters in diameter at the top.” Spaceflight Now puts the same dimensions at roughly 2.5 feet tall and 10.2 feet across, with the capsule weighing approximately 2,100 kilograms (4,600 pounds) and able to carry 1,000 kilograms (2,200 pounds) of payload, for a total weight of 3,100 kilograms.
The capsule is built from two main pieces. Per the FAA documents reported by SpaceNews, the top plate is an “aluminum structure partially wrapped in an unspecified thermal protection material” weighing 1,400 kilograms, while the heat shield is a “carbon-fiber structure covered in thermal protection material” weighing approximately 700 kilograms. The payload itself rides in a volume measuring 2.5 by 1.5 by 0.5 meters.
Starfall does not fly itself home. According to SpaceNews, the capsules have “cold-gas attitude control thrusters but no other propulsion system and do not have the ability to deorbit on their own.” For recovery, the vehicle descends under “a single main parachute, along with pilot and drogue parachutes, with the heat shield jettisoned before splashdown,” after which SpaceX uses boats to retrieve the components. Spaceflight Now notes the capsules are recovered in the Pacific Ocean, similar to Dragon spacecraft.
The demonstration is structured around two reentries. Spaceflight Now reports the mission aimed to “perform two Starfall reentries to demonstrate capabilities for future transport and delivery of goods through space.” The FAA application, as reported by SpaceNews, covers “two reentries of Starfall capsules in the Pacific Ocean about 1,300 kilometers off the coasts of California and Mexico.” Space.com likewise reports SpaceX filed “an application with the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for two reentry vehicle landings.”
The vehicle is meant to fly on more than one rocket. SpaceNews reports Starfall is designed to launch on “either Falcon 9 or Starship.” For this debut, the Falcon 9 first stage was booster B1078 flying its 29th mission; Spaceflight Now reports it landed on the drone ship A Shortfall of Gravitas, marking the 628th booster landing for SpaceX overall.
SpaceX framed the long-term ambition in expansive terms. The FAA documents reported by SpaceNews describe Starfall as a “proliferated successor” to the International Space Station, intended to support “a self-sustaining manufacturing economy in space.”
What We Don’t Know
SpaceX disclosed little about the flight itself. SpaceNews reports the company did not broadcast upper-stage video or provide the typical post-liftoff milestones, fueling speculation that a classified payload flew alongside Starfall. The specific cargo carried on this demonstration was not announced.
It also remains unclear how quickly Starfall will move from demonstration to routine service, and at what price, both of which will determine whether the orbital-return market grows beyond a handful of experimental flights.
Analysis
The significance of Starfall is its scale relative to what already flies. The return-from-orbit business has been the province of small startups, and a capsule rated for 1,000 kilograms of payload is far larger than the vehicles currently operating in that segment. According to SpaceNews, Varda Space Industries — the most established player — has “flown six missions of spacecraft equipped with reentry vehicles,” while ElevationSpace raised $40 million in a Series B round to develop microgravity research spacecraft.
That creates a structural tension. Several of these companies rely on SpaceX rideshare launches to reach orbit in the first place; with Starfall, SpaceX targets “in-space manufacturing and point-to-point cargo delivery” and “affordable, routine access to the microgravity environment for scientific research,” as SpaceNews describes the vehicle’s market — putting the launch provider into potential competition with its own customers. Whether SpaceX’s larger capsule expands the overall market or absorbs it will shape the next phase of the orbital-manufacturing industry.
