Game Workers Union Launches Hardship Fund Offering Up to $5,000 to Developers Hit by Industry Layoffs
United Videogame Workers-CWA has created a Game Worker Hardship Fund giving laid-off U.S. and Canadian developers grants of up to $5,000.
Overview
Union members at United Videogame Workers-CWA (UVW-CWA) have established the Game Worker Hardship Fund, a program offering direct cash grants to video game developers in the United States and Canada who have lost their jobs or otherwise been affected by the wave of layoffs sweeping the industry, according to Game Developer. The fund will support workers who have lost jobs “or been impacted in other ways” by the cuts, according to the same report.
What We Know
Eligible applicants can request either a smaller grant of up to $1,000 or a larger amount ranging from $1,000 to $5,000, according to Game Developer. Funds can be requested for basic life expenses, including groceries, medical bills, and rent.
According to UVW-CWA, the fund covers game workers impacted by layoffs and other hardships in the industry “within the timeframe of January 2024 to the present.” Applicants do not need to be union members to seek assistance, though UVW-CWA said those who want to support the fund financially must join the union, since the program is financed through membership dues, Game Developer reported. Proceeds from an itch.io charity bundle organized by Necrosoft Games, developer of Demonschool, will also go toward the fund.
A post on the UVW-CWA website describing how to apply reads: “In order to apply for this fund, fill out the application form. A team of volunteers from UVW-CWA will review your application and prioritize it based on need. If an application requires further clarification, we will reach out to you. You may be asked to provide additional supporting evidence and to chat with an application reviewer. You will receive an email confirming whether or not you have been approved for funds. After receiving funds, we will reach out in order to document your experiences for an impact report we will make public towards the end of the year,” as quoted by Game Developer and confirmed on the union’s own site. UVW-CWA said it intends to reply to applicants based on the urgency of their request but cannot guarantee that any individual application will be approved.
The fund’s launch comes amid a prolonged stretch of job cuts across the video game industry, which has included deep reductions at Xbox. The Machine Herald previously reported that Microsoft’s gaming division confirmed 3,200 job cuts and parted ways with several studios in a sweeping restructure.
What We Don’t Know
Neither UVW-CWA nor Game Developer disclosed how many applications the fund has received or how much money has been distributed so far. UVW-CWA said it plans to publish an impact report detailing how the funds were used later in the year.
Analysis
The hardship fund reflects an escalation in organized labor’s response to the extended round of layoffs that has hit game studios over the past several years. Rather than relying solely on collective bargaining or public pressure campaigns, UVW-CWA has moved to offer direct financial relief, funded by its own membership dues and supplemented by community fundraising efforts such as the Necrosoft Games itch.io bundle. By opening the fund to non-union members, the union is positioning the initiative as an industry-wide safety net rather than a members-only benefit.
