AMD Launches Radeon RX 9070 XT With RDNA 4 Architecture, Matching RTX 5070 Ti at $599 Before Supply Collapses

AMD released its first RDNA 4 consumer graphics cards on March 6, bringing the Radeon RX 9070 XT ($599) and Radeon RX 9070 ($549) to market. The launch represents AMD’s most competitive mainstream GPU generation in years, offering rasterization performance that reviewers say trades blows with NVIDIA’s $750 GeForce RTX 5070 Ti, while pairing a 16 GB GDDR6 framebuffer with a new machine-learning-powered upscaling technology called FSR 4 — at a substantially lower price. Within hours of going on sale, stock evaporated across AMD’s board partners. AMD’s Radeon vice president has since called the demand “unprecedented” and identified restocking Navi 48 supply as “priority number one.”
What We Know
Both cards are built on AMD’s Navi 48 die, manufactured on TSMC’s 4nm N4P process. According to Tom’s Hardware, the RX 9070 XT features 64 compute units, 4,096 stream processors, 64 second-generation ray accelerators, and 128 dedicated AI accelerators, with a boost clock reaching up to 2.97 GHz and a 304-watt TDP. Both cards ship with 16 GB of GDDR6 memory across a 256-bit bus at 20 Gbps, giving them a VRAM advantage over NVIDIA’s competing RTX 5070, which ships with 12 GB.
Review benchmarks from GamersNexus found the RX 9070 XT competing closely with the RTX 5070 Ti across rasterization workloads, typically staying within 5–6 percent at 4K across titles including Cyberpunk 2077 and Resident Evil 4 Remake. Tom’s Hardware awarded the card 4.5 out of 5 stars, describing it as offering “excellent mainstream value and performance” with “big generational improvements compared to RDNA 3.”
Ray tracing remains a relative weakness. GamersNexus testing showed NVIDIA ahead in nearly all ray-tracing scenarios, with gaps widening significantly in ray-tracing-heavy titles such as Black Myth: Wukong, where the RTX 5070 Ti led by 78 percent at 4K. AMD has, however, substantially closed the gap versus its previous generation; the RX 9070 XT delivers approximately 45 percent better ray tracing performance than the prior-generation RX 7900 XTX in that same title.
The most notable new feature is FSR 4, AMD’s first machine-learning-based upscaling technology, which is exclusive to the RX 9000 series. Unlike its predecessor FSR 3, FSR 4 uses the hardware-accelerated FP8 Wave Matrix Multiply Accumulate (WMMA) units built into RDNA 4’s AI accelerators to reconstruct higher-resolution images from lower-resolution inputs. AMD trained the FSR 4 model on AMD Instinct accelerators using high-quality ground-truth game data. Early reports indicate performance gains of 60 to 150 percent depending on game and resolution, moving AMD’s upscaling quality significantly closer to NVIDIA’s DLSS 4.
Efficiency is an area where NVIDIA retains an advantage. GamersNexus testing showed the RX 9070 XT drawing approximately 310 watts under load, while the RTX 5070 Ti produced comparable output at roughly 209 watts — a gap of around 100 watts that is relevant for users with power-constrained systems or those running 24/7 workloads.
What We Don’t Know
Whether the launch MSRPs will hold at retail is now uncertain. According to Tom’s Hardware’s coverage of AMD’s VP comments, all board partner models sold out within hours of the March 6 launch, and cards were subsequently listed on secondary markets at prices 22 percent or more above MSRP. AIB partner Yeston has stated it expects supply to stabilize only after April, raising questions about whether the $599 price point will be accessible to most buyers in the near term.
It is also unclear how the competitive dynamics will shift when NVIDIA begins shipping its own $549 GeForce RTX 5070 — announced at CES and now available at retail — in greater volume, and whether AMD’s more aggressive supply ramp of Navi 48 will be sufficient to meet demand before prices normalize.
Analysis
The RX 9070 XT launch is significant for AMD’s gaming GPU business, which had been losing share to NVIDIA’s RTX 40-series for several quarters. The RDNA 4 generation addresses two long-standing criticisms of AMD’s GPU lineup: inferior ray tracing performance and the absence of a machine-learning upscaler. FSR 4 in particular is a meaningful architectural step — prior FSR versions were spatial algorithms requiring no dedicated hardware, while FSR 4 requires RDNA 4’s AI cores and cannot run on older AMD cards or competing hardware.
At $599 for 16 GB of GDDR6 at near-RTX-5070-Ti performance levels, the RX 9070 XT represents strong value on paper. The supply collapse on launch day, however, echoes the early months of NVIDIA’s RTX 5000 series, when constrained supply drove prices well above MSRP. AMD has committed to aggressively ramping Navi 48 production, but the practical availability of these cards at their rated prices will determine whether the RDNA 4 launch translates to market share gains or remains a paper victory.
