Overview

Starfield, Bethesda Game Studios’ open-world space RPG that launched as an Xbox and PC exclusive in September 2023, arrives on PlayStation 5 on April 7, 2026. The port ships alongside Free Lanes, the game’s largest free content update to date, and Terran Armada, a new paid story expansion. The release represents the most commercially significant title to move from Xbox exclusivity to PlayStation under Microsoft’s evolving multiplatform strategy.

What We Know

The PS5 edition launches in two tiers: a Standard Edition at $49.99 and a Premium Edition at $69.99 that bundles both the Shattered Space and Terran Armada story expansions along with 1,000 Creation Credits, a Constellation Skin Pack, and digital artbook and soundtrack, according to Push Square. Pre-loading opens on April 5, with an install size of approximately 135 GB. Physical copies of the Standard Edition will be available at major retailers on launch day.

The Free Lanes update, arriving simultaneously on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S, introduces interplanetary cruise flight between planets within star systems, new space encounters, a land vehicle called the Moon Jumper, cross-outpost storage, and additional crew members, according to the PlayStation Blog. The update also adds an X-Tech resource for gear and ship customization, enhanced Starborn ability upgrades, and expanded New Game+ options that allow item transfers between playthroughs.

The Terran Armada DLC, available standalone for $10 or bundled in the Premium Edition, sends players through the Incursion system with a new story campaign featuring advanced robot enemies, new technology, and a new companion character, as detailed on the PlayStation Blog.

Performance on PS5 includes a Visual mode running at 4K resolution and 30 FPS, and a Performance mode targeting 60 FPS. PS5 Pro owners get additional Pro Performance and Pro Visual modes, according to Push Square. The PS5 version also takes advantage of the DualSense controller’s adaptive triggers, which vary by weapon and starship loadout, a light bar health indicator, touchpad navigation for switching perspectives, and speaker audio for in-game logs and ship communications.

“This version of Starfield is the result of years of love from Bethesda Game Studios and the Starfield community. Bigger, deeper and packed with even more ways to play,” wrote Anne Lewis of Bethesda Softworks on the PlayStation Blog.

The Multiplatform Strategy

Starfield’s PS5 release is the culmination of a strategic shift that began with smaller titles. Microsoft previously brought Hi-Fi Rush, Pentiment, and Sea of Thieves to PlayStation after periods of Xbox exclusivity, but those were mid-tier titles. Starfield, Bethesda’s flagship RPG and the studio’s first new IP in 25 years, represents a category change in what Microsoft is willing to share across platforms.

The move comes under new Xbox leadership. As previously reported, Phil Spencer retired from Xbox in February 2026 after 38 years at Microsoft, with AI executive Asha Sharma taking over as gaming CEO. Microsoft has also revealed Project Helix, its next-generation Xbox that will play both console and PC games natively, suggesting the company’s gaming future is less about platform exclusivity and more about ecosystem reach.

A Busy April for Console Releases

Starfield is not the only major title crossing platform lines in April 2026. Supergiant Games’ Hades II arrives on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on April 14, roughly seven months after its full launch on PC and Nintendo Switch, according to Engadget. The game will also be available on Xbox Game Pass at launch. As Kotaku noted, Hades II skips PS4 and Xbox One entirely despite running on the original Nintendo Switch, a decision Supergiant has not publicly explained.

What We Don’t Know

Microsoft has not disclosed how many copies Starfield has sold across Xbox and PC since its 2023 launch, making it difficult to assess the financial calculus behind the PS5 port. It remains unclear whether future Bethesda titles, including the next Elder Scrolls installment, will follow a similar multiplatform approach from launch or continue with timed exclusivity windows. The company has also not addressed whether Starfield’s PS5 release signals a permanent policy change or a case-by-case evaluation for each title.
