Unity 6.4 Ships With ECS as a Core Package, DirectStorage on Windows, and a New Platform Toolkit for Multi-Platform Launches
Unity 6.4 integrates the Entity Component System directly into the editor, adds Microsoft DirectStorage for faster asset loading, and debuts a Platform Toolkit that reduces multi-platform deployment to a single line of C# code.
Overview
Unity Technologies released Unity 6.4 on March 20, 2026, marking the engine’s most significant update since the Unity 6 launch in late 2024. The release promotes the Entity Component System to a core package, introduces Microsoft DirectStorage support on Windows, and ships the Platform Toolkit first announced at Unite 2026 — a cross-platform abstraction layer that lets developers write a single line of C# for features like achievements and cloud saves across every target platform.
Alongside the engine update, Unity also launched Unity Studio, a browser-based tool priced at $799 per seat per year that allows non-developers to create interactive 3D applications without writing code.
What We Know
The headline change in Unity 6.4 is the promotion of the Entity Component System (ECS) — along with Collections, Mathematics, and Entities Graphics — from optional packages to core engine components. This integration means ECS is now available out of the box in every Unity 6.4 project, lowering the barrier for studios that had previously avoided the data-oriented workflow due to its separate installation and experimental status. A new EntityId type replaces the legacy InstanceID as the preferred object identifier, with existing InstanceID methods marked as deprecated.
On the performance front, Unity 6.4 introduces DirectStorage support on Windows, enabling faster asset loading with reduced CPU overhead for textures, meshes, and entity data. Web builds also gained multithreading capabilities, with Burst-compiled jobs now able to run on parallel worker threads, and a new Microphone API enables audio capture in browser-based applications.
The Adaptive Performance Basic provider now supports consoles — PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S — in addition to existing desktop and mobile targets. Project Auditor, previously an optional package for profiling and diagnostics, is also now built into the editor by default.
On the rendering side, Unity removed support for PowerVR Texture Compression (PVRTC), recommending ASTC and ETC formats as alternatives, and fully removed the URP Compatibility Mode, requiring all custom render passes to use the Render Graph API.
Platform Toolkit
The Platform Toolkit, which debuted as part of Unity 6.3, is now a central feature of the 6.4 workflow. According to Adam Smith, Unity’s senior vice president of engine product, the toolkit enables developers to write a single line of C# code for platform-specific features like achievements, which the engine then automatically converts into the correct format for each target platform.
“It’s less about feature-driven evolution, it’s about the iteration time of the editor,” Smith told Game Developer. “For many of these smaller studios it’s easier to build the front end of the game than all the backend systems.”
The release also expands Unity’s in-app purchase dashboard with new integrations for Stripe and Coda, reflecting relaxed app store restrictions that now allow external payment processors.
Unity Studio
Released alongside Unity 6.4 on March 19, Unity Studio is a browser-based editor aimed at designers, engineers, trainers, and product teams who need to build interactive 3D experiences without coding expertise. The tool supports CAD file imports, offers a drag-and-drop interface, and includes a visual scripting system.
Unity Studio is priced at $799 per seat per year, which includes access to Unity Asset Manager. The platform currently cannot import projects from the full Unity Editor, though Unity has indicated this capability is planned for a future update. A 30-day free trial is available.
What We Don’t Know
Unity has not yet provided benchmarks for DirectStorage performance gains compared to the engine’s previous asset loading pipeline. The company’s roadmap indicates Unity 6.5 is already in planning with breaking changes documented as of late March, but the scope and timeline of that release remain unclear. It is also uncertain how quickly studios with large existing codebases will migrate to the new EntityId system given the deprecation of InstanceID.
Editor and Workflow Improvements
Beyond the major features, Unity 6.4 includes a redesigned Grid and Snap system in the Scene View with custom rotation support, making it more practical for level designs that do not align to orthogonal grids. Terrain shading now supports drag-and-drop material application, and Mesh LOD previewing gains visual toggles for debugging active LOD levels. The Build Profiles interface has been reorganized, grouping platforms into categories such as mobile, desktop, XR, and console.
For 2D developers, a new SpriteAtlasManager.CreateSpriteAtlas API enables runtime sprite atlas creation, and URP projects can now inject custom render passes into the frame loop. Animation state machines can start in non-default states through a new “Evaluate Entry Transitions On Start” option, eliminating a long-standing one-frame delay.
