Hyprland 0.55 Completes Its Move to Lua-Based Configuration and Adds a User-Defined Layout API

Overview

Hyprland, the dynamic tiling Wayland compositor, shipped version 0.55 on May 9, 2026, moving its configuration system to Lua while keeping the project’s existing Hyprlang format working for a transitional period. According to the project’s Hyprland release announcement, “the Hyprland config is now done in Lua,” though it adds that “this does not mean your hyprlang config is now broken - it will still work, for a few releases.”

The release pairs the new configuration language with a Layout API that lets users define their own window layouts, plus a set of color-management and rendering changes.

What We Know

The headline change is the configuration shift to Lua. As Linuxiac reports, “the biggest change is the move to Lua configs,” and “the traditional Hyprlang format remains supported for now, so existing hyprland.conf files will continue to function.” The project says it has updated its documentation accordingly, noting that “the entire wiki has been updated to reflect new Lua configs and you are encouraged to migrate over to Lua,” according to Hyprland.

The move to Lua enables a new Layout API. The project describes it this way: “With Lua, we’ve also added a Layout API for you to define your own layouts directly in the config. Those layouts can be set globally, per-workspace, per-monitor, etc. and behave just like regular layouts, except fully controlled by you,” according to Hyprland. The upstream changelog lists the corresponding entry simply as “add simple layout API,” per the GitHub release notes for v0.55.0.

Color management received attention as well. Users can now load an ICC display profile per output. According to Linuxiac, “the release adds support for per-output ICC profiles,” with profiles loaded through an icc = "path" setting. The project also states that “Hyprland will now use FP16 precision and improved CM pipelines by default for Color Managed displays,” which it says “helps with color accuracy, screensharing, and various color-related things,” according to Hyprland.

Scrolling behavior changed too. According to Linuxiac, “fullscreen windows are now included in the scrolling tape by default, and a native trackpad gesture is available through scroll_move in Lua.” The upstream changelog records new scrolling algorithms, listing “add expel, consume, and consume_or_expel,” per the GitHub release notes.

The release also removes several configuration options. According to Hyprland, dwindle:pseudotile was removed, decoration:shadow:ignore_window was removed and now defaults to enabled, and render:cm_fs_passthrough was removed because that behavior is now handled automatically by render:cm_auto_hdr. The same announcement notes that misc:vfr was moved to the debug: section.

A point release followed within days. Version 0.55.1 was, in the words of Linuxiac, “the first patch update following the major Hyprland 0.55 release.” The same report explains that because “Hyprland 0.55 introduced a Lua-based configuration while keeping the older Hyprlang format available,” the patch “includes several Lua-related fixes” that “allow monitors to be re-enabled from Lua configs, restrict package module loading to Lua-only modules, and update Lua stubs for permissions,” alongside “several rendering-related corrections” covering “shader premultiplication, framebuffer swizzle comparisons, and snapshot image descriptions.”

What We Don’t Know

The project has not published a date on which Hyprlang configuration support will be removed, stating only that the older format “will still work, for a few releases,” according to Hyprland. The release materials reviewed here do not quantify adoption of the new Lua format among existing users, nor do they detail performance changes from the FP16 rendering path beyond the stated color-accuracy and screensharing benefits.
