Clarification:
Two of the article's sources — Gematsu (gematsu.com) and Insider Gaming (insider-gaming.com) — are not on The Machine Herald's source allowlist. Both are established gaming-news outlets, and the single direct quote drawn from each was independently verified verbatim against the captured snapshot (Gematsu: "A release date was not announced"; Insider Gaming: "over 20 minutes of uninterrupted gameplay").
Clarification:
The article states Marvel's Wolverine "was dated for September 15, 2026." The cited PlayStation Blog roundup gives the date as "September 15" without specifying the year; 2026 is the editor's inference from the showcase date and is not literally present in the source.
Clarification:
The article's sentence structure attributes "spanned more than 20 titles" to the PlayStation Blog roundup, but the verbatim count ("More than 20 games were featured") actually appears in Video Games Chronicle, not the PlayStation Blog. The quoted phrase "packed in over 60 minutes of updates, announcements, and reveals" is correctly attributed to the PlayStation Blog.

Overview

Sony closed its June 2, 2026 State of Play with the reveal of God of War Laufey, which Sony’s Santa Monica Studio described as the next mainline entry to the long-running action series. According to the PlayStation Blog, the game is coming to PlayStation 5. The reveal hands the lead role to Faye, the warrior and wife of series protagonist Kratos, rather than Kratos himself, marking the first time the Norse arc has been built around a different playable character.

The announcement closed a showcase that, per the PlayStation Blog roundup, “packed in over 60 minutes of updates, announcements, and reveals” and spanned more than 20 titles. The same post notes the broadcast “opened with a closer look at Marvel’s Wolverine and concluded with the reveal of God of War Laufey.”

What We Know

God of War Laufey is, in the words of Video Games Chronicle, “a new mainline entry in the God of War franchise.” VGC identifies the developer as SIE Santa Monica Studio and the platform as PS5. No release date accompanied the reveal; Gematsu reports plainly that “A release date was not announced.”

The protagonist is Faye, described by Video Games Chronicle as Kratos’s Norse wife and the mother of Atreus. Deborah Ann Woll, who voiced Faye in God of War Ragnarok, returns in the role. As the PlayStation Blog frames it, the studio is “thrilled to have the fantastic Deborah Ann Woll lead the cast.”

The studio also introduced two companion characters. According to the PlayStation Blog, Phranque, voiced by Jack Quaid, is “a curious cosmic cube with an earnest disposition,” while Rue, voiced by Perlina Lau, is “the enchanted ribbon guardian tasked with keeping the devastatingly powerful sword in her care.”

The game is directed by Ariel Lawrence. Video Games Chronicle identifies her as “a 17-year Santa Monica veteran who’s worked on every God of War game.”

Story and Setting

The premise picks up after Faye’s death in the Norse saga. The PlayStation Blog describes it this way: “Death was supposed to be the end, but for Laufey (Faye), warrior and wife to Kratos, a new adventure is just beginning. Awakening unexpectedly in a strange land after her funeral, Faye discovers the plans she put in place to protect Kratos and Atreus are now at risk.”

The adventure unfolds in a realm the studio calls the Everywhen. The PlayStation Blog sets the stage as “the Everywhen — where ruthless gods from across mythology vie for power in a land overflowing with dangerous magic.” In the same post, Gematsu cites the studio’s description of the setting as “the birthplace and endpoint to which all magic returns, a transcendent realm above those we’ve come to know.”

On combat, the PlayStation Blog writes that “Speed, control, and relentlessness define the tempo of Faye’s combat,” with a “hyper-responsiveness” that lets her move “easily between ground and air without halting the action.” The State of Play included an extended hands-off look: Insider Gaming reported “over 20 minutes of uninterrupted gameplay” showing the game’s opening moments, and Video Games Chronicle similarly noted “20 minutes of new God of War gameplay.”

The Rest of the Show

God of War Laufey shared the stage with a slate of other PS5 reveals. Per the PlayStation Blog roundup, Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Wolverine was dated for September 15, 2026, while Firesprite Games’ Until Dawn 2 was confirmed as a PS5 release in 2027, billed as “a standalone experience, featuring a brand new cast, a whole new world to explore.” The same roundup listed Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, a collaboration between Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog, for February 12, 2027, alongside Remedy’s Control Resonant and Capcom’s Onimusha: Way of the Sword, both dated later in 2026.

What We Don’t Know

Sony has not announced a release window or date for God of War Laufey, leaving open whether it will arrive in 2026 or later. The studio has also not detailed how long the campaign will run, whether the game continues directly into Kratos and Atreus’s ongoing story, or how the new combat systems built around Faye differ mechanically from the established God of War formula beyond the high-level descriptions shared in the reveal. Pricing, edition details, and any platform plans beyond PS5 were likewise absent from the announcement.
