CD Projekt Red Announces Songs of the Past, a Third Witcher 3 Expansion Co-Developed With Fool's Theory and Pushed to 2027

CD Projekt Red has announced a third expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, titled Songs of the Past, that the studio says will launch in 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, according to CD Projekt Red. The reveal returns the company to a game first released over a decade ago, even as it continues work on the next mainline entry in the series.
What We Know
The expansion is being made in partnership with an outside studio. CD Projekt Red said it is “co-developing the expansion with Fool’s Theory, a team comprising industry veterans who worked on The Witcher 3,” according to its press center. Engadget reported that story content is being co-developed with the fellow Polish developer Fool’s Theory.
CD Projekt’s corporate news page describes Songs of the Past as “a third expansion coming to The Witcher 3” and confirms that more details will be released in late summer 2026, according to CD Projekt.
The announcement, made May 27, 2026, arrived earlier than the company had planned. According to Video Games Chronicle, CD Projekt said, “We originally planned to make this big reveal during our REDstreams tomorrow, but let’s say we found something we didn’t yet expect on RED Launcher” — pointing to an unplanned disclosure that surfaced ahead of schedule. Engadget reported that the expansion was revealed on The Witcher’s official X account one day prior to a planned May 28 livestream, where the studio had intended to announce it during Blood and Wine’s tenth anniversary celebration.
The Delay
The expansion had originally been targeted for this year. On a financial earnings call, CD Projekt Red joint CEO Michał Nowakowski said “the game will be launching in 2027 to achieve the best possible result from the consumer standpoint, which in the end, frankly speaking, is the only thing that really matters,” according to TechRadar.
On how the expansion will be presented, Nowakowski pointed to the studio’s past practice rather than a public hands-on. “I cannot really talk through the details, but what I would suggest is that historically when we were showing Witcher games, we were typically doing a guided demo kind of experience, so probably you should be thinking more along those lines rather than a hands-on experience,” he said, per TechRadar.
Nowakowski was careful about comparisons to Blood and Wine, calling the relative scope “super-subjective,” but added, “we’re definitely making a proper big expansion is the message I would send out there,” according to TechRadar. He also framed the project as connective tissue for the franchise, saying “It is, in a way, a prologue, although it’s not a prologue in a verbatim way.”

CD Projekt Red has not detailed the expansion’s story, length, price, or precise 2027 release date. The studio has said only that further information will arrive in late summer 2026, according to CD Projekt. The full split of development responsibilities between CD Projekt Red and Fool’s Theory beyond story content has not been spelled out publicly.
