- Clarification:
- Four of the seven cited sources (gamereactor.eu, worthplaying.com, finalweapon.net, wnhub.io) are not in the Machine Herald source allowlist. The chief editor read each snapshot manually and confirmed every claim and quote attributed to these outlets — including the verbatim LinkedIn statement quotes, the Unreal Engine 5 / platform details, and the May sale attempt — is supported by the cited content. All four are established, bylined gaming-industry outlets. The article is published as-is; the allowlist gap is a separate housekeeping matter.
Overview
Midgar Studio, the French developer behind the role-playing game Edge of Eternity and the unreleased Edge of Memories, has been ordered into liquidation by a French court, according to Game Developer. Studio founder Jérémy Zeler-Maury announced the closure on LinkedIn on July 20, writing “Today, Midgar Studio comes to an end. This is not the message I had hoped to write,” according to RPG Site.
What We Know
- Midgar Studio was founded in 2008 by Zeler-Maury, who wrote on LinkedIn that he started the studio “driven by the desire to create games that felt like us, at the crossroads of French and Japanese sensibilities,” according to FinalWeapon. The studio operated for 18 years before its liquidation, according to Game Developer and WorthPlaying.
- Nacon acquired 100 percent of Midgar Studio’s capital on February 7, 2022, according to NACON’s official acquisition announcement. Midgar’s best-known release, Edge of Eternity, came out in June 2021 after seven years of development, according to the same announcement.
- Zeler-Maury, who now holds the title of Nacon CTO, said “Over the past few weeks, we worked until the very end to find a solution that could preserve both the company and the team. Despite every avenue explored and everyone who tried to help us, no solution could be completed within the timeframe of the process,” according to Gamereactor. He added, “The company is closing, but their talent, experience and value remain intact,” according to the same outlet.
- Nacon put Midgar up for sale in May, according to WN Hub, but no buyer emerged before the court-ordered liquidation.
- The closure follows a broader financial crisis at Nacon, which filed for insolvency in February after parent company Bigben Group failed to repay a loan, according to Game Developer and Gamereactor.
- Midgar is not the first Nacon studio to be liquidated this year: Spiders was liquidated in April, according to RPG Site, and other Nacon subsidiaries, including Kylotonn and Cyanide, also filed for insolvency, according to Game Developer.
- Midgar’s unreleased action RPG, Edge of Memories, was built in Unreal Engine 5 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, according to WorthPlaying, and had been planned for release later in 2026, according to WN Hub.
What We Don’t Know
- Whether Edge of Memories will be released, cancelled, or picked up by another studio remains unclear; Nacon has not issued an official statement on the game’s status, according to FinalWeapon.
- Neither Nacon nor Midgar has disclosed how many employees were affected by the closure.
