China's Chip-Material Makers Move on Japan's Turf as Guangyuan Commits $1 Billion to T-Glass for AI Servers
Guangyuan is spending $1 billion on T-glass and low-dielectric glass cloth, pushing a Chinese supplier into a niche long dominated by Japan's Nittobo as AI-server demand tightens supply.

The investment pushes a Chinese supplier into a corner of the chip supply chain that Japan’s Nittobo has long dominated, TrendForce reported, at a moment when AI-server demand has turned a once-obscure reinforcing fabric into one of advanced packaging’s tightest bottlenecks.

According to TrendForce, Guangyuan invested US$1 billion in a Henan factory to boost T-glass and low-dielectric glass cloth output, with the facility coming online in phases since last year, and plans to raise production and sales to 1 million meters per month.
The company was the first in China to develop low-dielectric glass cloth for AI servers and 5G base stations, and counts Japan’s Panasonic Holdings and Resonac Holdings among its customers, TrendForce reported. Guangyuan also resumed its initial public offering application on China’s ChiNext board in July 2026, three years after its previous attempt, according to the same report.
Why T-Glass Matters
T-glass is “a high-tech offshoot of E-glass” prized for ultra-low thermal expansion and dimensional stability that keeps advanced packaging materials from warping, according to TrendForce. As IC substrates grow larger in 2026, manufacturers are “doubling T-glass usage in core layers and adding more layers overall,” the outlet reported, because the fabric reinforces the organic substrates that carry high-speed signals between silicon and the printed circuit board.
Supply is concentrated in a single company. “Nittobo is the world’s only company capable of stably mass-producing top-grade T-Glass,” according to TrendForce, which noted the Japanese firm’s low-thermal-expansion cloth prevents substrate warpage during advanced packaging and improves AI chip yield. Nittobo holds “a near-monopoly on production-grade T-glass,” supplying NVIDIA, Microsoft, Google, and Amazon, TrendForce reported. To expand output, Nittobo has enlisted Taiwan’s Nan Ya, which by 2027 will weave 20% of the specialty glass-fiber fabrics Nittobo supplies to the global market, according to TrendForce.
The Broader Materials Battle
Guangyuan’s move is one front in a wider Chinese push into chip materials long led by Japanese suppliers. Shengyi Technology, described by TrendForce as “China’s largest producer of copper-clad laminates for printed circuit boards,” is investing about 5.2 billion yuan in a new Guangdong factory whose first phase is scheduled to begin operations in 2028, plus 1.4 billion yuan in a first overseas plant in Thailand. Shengyi’s M9-grade copper-clad laminate “has been certified for NVIDIA’s Rubin and GB300 platforms,” the report said.
Elsewhere, Konfoong Materials — “China’s leading producer of sputtering targets used to form thin films on semiconductor wafers” — will invest 350 million yuan over the next two years to build a factory in South Korea supplying SK hynix and Samsung Electronics, according to TrendForce. And Chinese photoresist supplier Red Avenue New Material Group filed for a Hong Kong Stock Exchange listing in February 2026, in a segment where Japanese companies including Tokyo Ohka Kogyo and JSR hold about 80% of the global market, TrendForce reported.
The materials drive parallels Beijing’s broader self-sufficiency campaign; as previously reported, China has set a target for 70% of its chip-making equipment to be domestically produced by 2027.
What We Don’t Know
TrendForce’s report does not detail whether Guangyuan’s low-dielectric cloth meets the quality bar of Nittobo’s top-grade T-glass for the most demanding AI packaging, nor how quickly the Henan plant will reach its stated 1-million-meter monthly target. The outcome of the renewed ChiNext IPO application is also unresolved.
Analysis
Materials are the least visible layer of the AI hardware stack, yet T-glass shows how a single reinforcing fabric can gate the output of the most advanced accelerators. With one Japanese supplier controlling production-grade cloth, any credible second source has strategic value — for Chinese packagers navigating export controls and for global buyers seeking to de-risk supply. Whether Guangyuan and its peers can qualify at the top grade, rather than merely add volume at the low end, will determine how much this $1 billion bet actually loosens the chokepoint.
