Global Semiconductor Sales Hit $88.8 Billion in February as Industry Tracks Toward First Trillion-Dollar Year
The Semiconductor Industry Association reported February 2026 sales of $88.8 billion, a 61.8 percent year-over-year surge driven by AI infrastructure spending, as the chip market remains on pace to cross $1 trillion in annual revenue for the first time.
February Numbers Signal Sustained Momentum
Global semiconductor sales reached $88.8 billion in February 2026, the Semiconductor Industry Association disclosed on April 3, marking a 7.6 percent increase over January’s $82.5 billion and a striking 61.8 percent jump from the $54.9 billion recorded in February 2025. The monthly figures, compiled by the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics organization as a three-month moving average, reinforce the trajectory that has the industry on course to surpass $1 trillion in annual revenue for the first time, following a $791.7 billion haul in 2025.
SIA president and CEO John Neuffer said global chip sales “remained very strong in February, exceeding January’s totals and far outpacing sales from a year ago,” citing the Asia-Pacific region, the Americas, and China as the primary drivers of year-over-year growth. On a month-over-month basis, the Americas led all regions with a 12.6 percent increase, followed by Europe at 10.2 percent, Asia-Pacific at 6.0 percent, China at 3.6 percent, and Japan at 3.0 percent. Year-over-year, Asia-Pacific posted the largest gain at 93.5 percent, with the Americas at 59.2 percent and China at 57.4 percent.
AI Chips Account for Half the Revenue but a Fraction of Volume
The acceleration is overwhelmingly concentrated in a narrow slice of the market. Generative AI chips are approaching $500 billion in revenue in 2026, accounting for roughly half of global chip sales while representing less than 0.2 percent of total unit volume. The concentration reflects the extraordinary value embedded in each AI accelerator die — a single NVIDIA Blackwell GPU or AMD Instinct chip can cost tens of thousands of dollars, compared to the pennies charged for a commodity microcontroller.
This lopsided dynamic is most visible in foundry economics. TSMC, which fabricates the vast majority of advanced AI chips for NVIDIA, AMD, Apple, and Qualcomm, reported record fourth-quarter 2025 profit with a 35 percent year-over-year jump, with its high-performance computing division accounting for 55 percent of quarterly revenue. The company has raised its 2026 capital expenditure guidance to between $52 billion and $56 billion, up from $40.9 billion in 2025, to expand capacity for 2nm and 3nm nodes that are already sold out through 2028.
Memory Prices Climb as AI Devours Supply
The AI infrastructure buildout is straining the broader semiconductor supply chain, particularly in memory. Memory products generated $223.1 billion in 2025, a 34.8 percent increase year-over-year, and prices are expected to climb as much as 20 percent further in 2026 as high-bandwidth memory production for AI accelerators competes with conventional DRAM and NAND flash for fabrication capacity.
The squeeze is already affecting consumer markets. PC and smartphone shipments are projected to decline in 2026 due to rising memory costs, a trend compounded by the global GDDR7 and LPDDR5X shortage that has forced NVIDIA to reduce gaming GPU production by an estimated 30 to 40 percent in the first half of the year. The divergence between booming AI chip revenue and softening consumer electronics demand underscores a structural shift in how semiconductor capacity is allocated.
Regional Picture and Geopolitical Currents
Asia-Pacific’s 93.5 percent year-over-year surge reflects the region’s dominance in both chip manufacturing and consumption, anchored by hyperscaler data center buildouts across Taiwan, South Korea, and increasingly Southeast Asia. China’s 57.4 percent growth comes despite tightening U.S. export controls on advanced AI chips and chipmaking equipment, as domestic foundries and equipment makers continue to capture a growing share of the local AI accelerator market. Chinese chipmakers collectively captured approximately 41 percent of the country’s AI accelerator server market in 2025, up from a fraction of that just two years earlier.
The Americas’ 59.2 percent gain reflects the concentration of AI chip designers — NVIDIA, AMD, Qualcomm, and Broadcom are all headquartered in the United States — as well as expanding domestic manufacturing commitments, including TSMC’s growing Arizona megafab complex.
Risks on the Horizon
The path to $1 trillion is not without headwinds. A Deloitte analysis identifies several risks that could temper the trajectory: return-on-investment uncertainty for hyperscaler data center projects that have collectively committed over $700 billion in 2026 capital expenditure; power availability constraints, with AI data centers projected to require 92 gigawatts by 2027; and the possibility that rapid improvements in chip efficiency could reduce future demand more quickly than expected.
Competitive pricing pressure on currently high-margin AI chips also looms as Samsung, Intel, and a wave of custom silicon efforts from cloud providers seek to erode NVIDIA’s dominance. If even a fraction of the AI investment cycle proves speculative, the correction could ripple across the entire semiconductor supply chain.
For now, however, the numbers point in one direction. With February sales annualizing above $1 trillion and no sign of AI infrastructure spending plateauing, the semiconductor industry appears poised to cross a threshold that seemed improbable just three years ago, when annual sales stood at $527 billion.
